A thrilling vampire novel set aboard a nineteenth-century American steamboat!  This is one book I never saw coming, and not just because it’s less than four hundred pages long.  *Side-eye at those Fire & Ice doorstops*

My childhood spins around the Disneyland pond on the Mark Twain didn’t prepare me for how treacherous the mighty Mississippi once was.  Supernatural horror components work perfectly in this environment, (just ask Anne Rice), even when they pale in the face of American slavery—Martin’s nightmare is no white-washed chronicle of history.  The author’s luscious writing, stunning attention to detail, and magnificent characters made for an unforgettable dark adventure.

Audible has been rocking my sci-fi nerd world with its series of Alien audiobooks during the past few years.  The latest dark adventure by Tim Waggoner, entitled ‘Prototype,’ had me looking over my shoulder far more than usual during my morning walks.  This sumptuous nightmare was another study in the psychology of how greed tempers fear, and I had a marvelous time guessing which emotion would drive its characters into the monster’s jaws.  I particularly enjoyed this version of the xenomorph itself, dubbed here a necromorph because of its insidious hunting method.  In the Alien franchise, each iteration of the beast always presents unique mutations imparted by its host, and this bad puppy was no disappointment. *begins to cough from puppy breath*

This was an excellent entry into the ‘Alien’ universe, and weeks later I still can’t get it out of my head.  A bronze-age world controlled by "demons" didn’t initially strike me as something I wanted, but by the end of this book I was entirely devoted to it.  I’ll go one step further to say that this is one of the only franchise books I think would make a fantastic one-off story for the big screen. Ahiliyah, like Ripley, is the type of hero I would actually follow into a hopeless war.

This was one of the finest memoirs I've ever come across. The author has a richness of insight that few are capable of when pointing their lens at a mirror. I listened to the audiobook, which Mulgrew reads, and which is filled with unforgettable joy and sorrow. Her recollections have the sort of brutal but musical honesty that have stayed with me for weeks after hearing them. I've found her exquisite voice narrating many of my own characters as they come to life on the keyboard. What a gift!

From start to finish, I was delighted by this series. Duncan Hamilton offers his audience a tremendous voice in his hero, Wulfric, who I was madly in love with long before I ever got to the second book. The incredible Simon Vance narrates the story masterfully, bringing his own special magic to make this great book even greater. I could not recommend a series more!

This is a compelling adventure series about the life of a special young woman who finds herself saved by a knight, just when his best days of service seem long behind him.  Throw in a few shattered dreams, unexpected heroes, and the threat of magical fascism, and you have all the ripe ingredients to cook an epic story.  Wait, did I mention dragons?  (I should’ve led with them.)  THIS BOOK HAS DRAGONS!!! Big ones, little ones, vicious ones, and wise ones. My favorite thing about this tale was seeing Hamilton’s world through the voice of a dragon.
