Der Wurm in unserem Herzen: Wie das Wissen um die Sterblichkeit unser Leben beeinflusst by Tom Pyszczynski, Jeff Greenberg, Sheldon Solomon
5.0
I haven't been this fascinated by a nonfiction book that wasn't a textbook in a long time. This is an insightful look into one of our unique curse/blessings as human animals: the awareness of our own inevitable death. In a clear and even sometimes entertaining way, the authors present findings from psychological studies relating to mortality salience and terror management theory a.k.a. how we deal with existential dread. I took a class on death and dying in college and loved it - this book has greatly expanded my knowledge on the subject and left me with lots to ponder. Since it's a subject that literally everyone can relate to, I can't recommend this book enough. I would go so far as to say skip Ernest Becker's The Denial of Death (which the research in this book is largely based on but, in my opinion, is quite outdated) and go right for The Worm at the Core.
The Prepper's Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home for a Disaster by Bernie Carr
5.0
I found this book very helpful and informative. It's not completely comprehensive for every kind of disaster or SHTF scenario, but it is a great overview of preparedness basics. The author has lots of tips to do things in resourceful, inexpensive ways and to plan ahead before something happens. I will keep this book handy for later reference.
Myths, Lies and Half-Truths of Language Usage by John McWhorter
5.0
I cannot recommend this series enough for anybody interested in grammar, the history of the English language, or linguistics in general. John McWhorter has a lot of knowledge, perspective, and personality. A fascinating and often funny look at the beauty and weirdness of the language we use every day.
Norse Mythology: A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation by Neil Gaiman
5.0
The cool characters and events of Norse mythology with the awesomely whimsical storytelling of Neil Gaiman. He narrates the audiobook himself. What more could you ask for? If you like mythology, fantasy, or simply great storytelling, this is a must-read.
