Batman, Volume 6: Graveyard Shift
Marguerite Bennett, Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, Gerry Duggan
This is the B-sides volume of Snyder's Batman run, but these individual issues still pack a punch. My favorite is the flashback to the introduction of the bat signal, and seeing all of Bruce's future proteges get inspired for the first time.
Terrifying addition and supposed conclusion to the relationship between Batman and his greatest foe. Their battle in this volume reaches epic scale and cements the "New 52" run of the Caped Crusader as one of the best in history.
A great penultimate entry of a series. Instead of doing nothing but setting up a final installment, we see a time in this woman's life where her full force is unleashed, and a house of grunge rockers pays the price. A perfect read.
No more Lovecraftian Noir left for me to read. I'm sad now.
A unique post apocalyptic world is created in The Girl with All the Gifts, and a fascinating one at that. Melanie, a small child, becomes an incredibly layered and sophisticated protagonist as this novel presses on. It is her view of the world around her that truly makes this story one of a kind.
I am astounded by how great this is. As feminism finally becomes a larger discussion point in culture right now this book perfectly states how problematic patriarchy currently is and how dystopian and more awful it could become in the future if left unchecked. And as important as these themes are to the story, they don't overshadow the truly amazing characters that are solidified so quickly in this series. Frankly, this is world building at its finest.
