Confusing at first read, but worth a second read around (especially after completion of Nona the Ninth). Wonderful prose.
wish goodreads had half stars, cause this would be 3 1/2. a bit of weird pacing and some unclear character motivations, but a lot of what i enjoyed of the first book i enjoyed in the second. i enjoyed eli a lot more in this one.
Electric, dark, and really fun. Schwab has created a really fun world to explore and clearly has a good time doing so. The relationships in this book are electric and engaging. My main two complaints are the occasional over-the-top Edge(tm) and the ending that felt kind of rushed. The edge is a personal preference, but it did kind of take me out of it occasionally. For a book that felt well paced for 90% of it, the ending felt like she had a deadline to meet and needed to set up the sequel.
Schwab's writing soars best when they're writing fight scenes. My god, the fight scenes. They were delightfully gory and vivid.
Overall, a good book, electric and dark, if suffering from a rushed ending.
