junomancy's Reviews (69)
I don't typically write reviews for books I've DNFed, but this one was particularly bad enough that I needed to get my thoughts out. I've been trying to read more absurdism and this seemed interesting! Funny, even! The blurb on the back was intriguing and the first page was in a style I really liked. I shouldn't be surprised that a book from the 80s featured rampant objectification of women (including underaged women) and racist undertones, but it was uncomfortable. And I know people will try and say that's the "point", but there are authors who can make The Point without writing about women as if they're either sexual objects or gross lesbians. Not taking comedic book suggestions from old men anymore and definitely not spending $18 on those suggestions.
Holy Shit. I enjoy Zauner's music a lot, so I was curious to see her writing in other mediums. I had to really pace myself with this book, mostly because I cried almost every time I had a session of reading it. Her descriptions of caring for her mother hit home as someone whose mother is currently (incredibly thankfully) in remission for her own cancer. A highly recommended read for anyone, regardless of if you listen to her music or not (although you should also do that).
If you like the cerebral, abstract, and non linear, this book is absolutely for you. If you need a story to make total sense and be linear, less so. Clever and fun.
