The Pedersen Kid might've been the best story out of all five of them. The title story was also very good, and I liked Icicles and Order of Insects-- that is to say, Mrs. Mean was unfortunately my least favorite. Gass has a prose that is cold and ugly and frankly thrilling, which I think worked best in The Pedersen Kid.

Thoughtful critique overall: most of the essays did a good job of not reiterating the same points despite being about similar / the same topics.

Though I often agreed with Gay, I think some of her points are dulled by the way she assumes within her writing that the reader shares the same values as her-- which makes a few of the essays seem like she's pointing at events/action she doesn't agree with and holding out a thumbs-down, saying "am I right, guys?".

But yes, all in all good.

Fairly good prose, but lacking in direction.
