Olga Dies Dreaming by Xochitl Gonzalez

This book started promising and I thought the story overall was a good one, but it just disappointed me. I thought the romance was super cute and I loved feeling immersed in the viewpoint of a Puerto Rican-American family. I thought Gonzalez really endeared me to the imperfect Olga and her complex family and personal life.
But this book fell flat for me in the writing. It felt so heavy handed in the message and morals, like we had to be told everything rather than be shown it or read it between the lines. I also felt like Gonzalez tried to cover way too many issues in this book; including queer identity, parental emotional abuse, childhood trauma, r*pe, gentrification, political corruption... Like put a trigger warning on this book ya know. It just felt too crowded and didn't work for me like I had hoped.

So much fun to read! The story pulled me in by the first 20 pages and made it very easy to read instead of studying this week. Finlay is so endearing and chaotic, and while the plot was campy and over the top it worked so well for me. Can't wait to read #2 in the series

5 stars for the audiobook because it was so well done, but the pure story is a 4 for me. It was a good thriller with a fun podcast element and I enjoyed the aspect of looking into a current case parallel to an old case in the area.

Beautifully written, compellingly flawed characters, and complex family. Also a deeply sad story. The wandering third person perspective was not my favorite and it was definitely a bit slow going but it really grew on me the longer I read

My heaaaaaaaaart.
I loved the balance of sweetness and spiciness, I loved the slow burn reveal of Miles' past, and I loved the stylistic writing choices. It was such a quick read because the connection they had made me desperate to know if they ended up together in the end.
Points off for the pseudo- incest plot line
