i had a feeling this would be a good one, and i was right. couldn't put it down once i started it.
the story flew so nicely, writing was so smooth and the story grasped your attention from the very start.
as much as i expected it, the hurtful parts of this book were very much so hurtful. as thankful i am for the worst of it not being described in explicit detail, the connotations were enough for my heart to hurt a lot and for me to tear up at moments. jonah went through hell and back.
the relationship between jonah and liak truly felt like "a light at the end of the tunnel" kind of thing and i loved how it was more based on true friendship these two have found in each other than on the romantic sife off it. i would go as far to say that the romantic relationship wasn't even the main focus of this book for me but more so the comfort, safe space and pure friendship these two have found in each other. and later on built their relationship on.
one thing i wish was better i guess was that i wanted more explanation on liam's backstory, his parent's deal with the art school and just more generally on his character so we could grasp more of who he is, but it's not that big of a deal because it didn't take that much from the story.
and would have wished it was longer not gonna lie. there's so much more i want to know about these characters.
overall, a very attention grabbing read, with good writing, good story and lovely characters.

my heart was in my throat 90% of this book.
"To think of those Nickel nights where the only sounds were tears and insects, how you could sleep in a room crammed with sixty boys and still understand that you were the only person on earth. Everybody around and nobody around at the same time."

this one hurt like a mf at times
The ache for my mother is still there. It’s never going to leave. But it’s tucked deep inside layers and layers of remembering. Some of it good, some of it bad. All of it important.

and what do YOU know about longing and yearning??!?!!?!?!?!?!?
"Where’s the tragedy in that? The essence of life is in solitude– wouldn’t you agree? All unions are built on falsehood. People can only get to know each other up to a point and then they make up the rest, until one day, seeing their mistake, they turn their backs on sadness and run away. Would this ever happen, if they stopped believing in their dreams and made do with what was possible? If everyone accepted what was natural, then no one would suffer disappointment, no one would curse fate. We have every right to see our situation as pitiful, but we must confine our pity to ourselves. To pity another is to assume superiority and that is why we must never think we are superior to others, or that others are more unfortunate…"

well....officially can say i finished it and officially can announce that i absolutely loved it. definitely the best book out of the three, too.
you cant deny it, the books are problematic, some phrases and words used are just.....a big no, some stuff absolutely isnt accurate....but do i care? absolutely not. i had a blast reading it and it was so interesting until the very end. fell in love with the characters too (some more than the others) and im sure a hyperfixation on this will have a chokehold on me for some time. now i will be consuming every possible fanfic set in this universe there is.
*3 years later and im still hyperfixated on it and it aint going nowhere*

sooo....may be her best book yet?????
i had so much fun reading this one, actually. devoured it in one day because i just couldn't stop.
for check & mate one of my biggest complaints was the overuse of pop culture references and this one barely had any that i caught and i only have to say thank fuck to that.
this is definitely one of her spicier books (though i haven't read everything by the author) and she has actually improved a lot on that aspect in my opinion.
both scarlett and lukas were very likable to me, their relationship even more so, and if you know anybody who can write a man genuinely ready to die for his love interest, it's a man written by ali hazelwood and i respect that and love lukas for it even more.
them actually communicating with each other whenever something came up actually added few years to my life spam.
only one who genuinely annoyed me so much was pen. living in that delusion for so long over a superficial past relationship that has been dead for good 6 years has be absolutely baffled and her actions regarding it were atrocious and so annoying to me. but alas.... there has to be something...
but overall, a very very enjoyable read. i love the fact that i always learn something new reading her books, because her research is good. this time it was diving, last time it was chess and i gotta say every single time it has been entertaining to me. there are faults in her books of course but that aspect of her books has always been very good in my opinion.
anyways, good first read of the year if you ask me. and definitely one of her better works.
