been going through it and wanted something light, and this definitely delivered! it was cheesy and had several cringey lines of dialogue (the "nate hawkins is most definitely a man written by a woman" made me roll my eyes so far into the back of my head), but I thought this was super cute!
the overwhelming negative comments i'm seeing here really surprised me I mean yes again it is cheesy but this is not trying to be a classic it's just trying to be a silly little romance novel and that's ok!

how is your whole thing fighting for victims of trafficking but you are a rapist?? are you fr
zane initially is like i'm so depressed i can't save every poor little kid who's being trafficked i will devote my life to their freedom but he runs into addie once says wow her voice is the type you only hear in porn (his exact words) and just decides to end up raping her at gunpoint?????? like he even admits it and says “the only predator ill allow in her house is myself” like????
addie you are also one stupid bitch. if you're going to stay in your cursed house with a murderer stalker outside you're telling me you're not going to at least buy a gun?? just go with the kitchen knife to every interaction that's a great idea
this also had genuinely some of the worst, corniest dialogue i've ever had the displeasure of reading. i'll save you the pain of adding in some quotes but trust me on this one i'm doing you a favor. the plot is also all over the place, like addie has a ghost in her house i guess purely for vibes because it was mentioned a handful of times and then never explored?

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
1.0
absolute garbage oh my god
this "extraordinary love story" as the blurb calls it is just grooming??? half of the book is just naked adult henry hanging out with toddler clare in the middle of the woods telling her she's gonna be his wife, and then teenage clare doing everything in her power to seduce this mysterious adult man who has been talking to her since she was a child. and she very shortly after is successful in this seduction, mind you!
if i could somehow extinguish my morals and ignore this, the book would still be bad! it's so boring! and every issue is miraculously fixed by magic- are we just supposed to just accept no one saw henry running around naked at work for 20 years? did henry think his little note telling clare to live would work after making her entire developing life revolve around him? does niffenegger truly think if you miscarry the fetus comes out breathing?
i'm sorry i know i said i'd drop it but i mean come onn man like their "extraordinary love story" when they are actually both in the same broad area of time is literally just clare being upset henry's not there and henry being like damn you used to let me hit hope i go back like???
henry gets the brunt of my ire (see: grooming), but clare is at her best (and ignoring the grooming which, again, you can't) "i'm so rich and pretty :( poor me". none of the side characters were compelling for that matter, and the poc also felt very caricaturized
overall horrible read i don't remember who rec'd this for me but i sincerely wish i could time travel back and stop you

Alone With You in the Ether by Olivie Blake

this book is everything. the prose is so poetic, the subtle intimacy is ridiculous, the fervent desire to have your muse be your art, and the characters *need* to yearn for each other is just... wow
this was like if pride & prejudice (2005) and hozier had a baby. there is such a fixation on hands and breaths and long poetic musings about the lengths regan & aldo would go for each other. like these are only *some* the parts I annotated:
"I am more addicted to the thought of your name on my tongue than I am to any other form of vice. The thought of having you is more dangerous than any cocktail of drugs, the idea of belonging to you endlessly destructive.”
‘Yes,’ he said—he would have said it to anything, she could have suggested a mutiny and he’d have searched tirelessly for an axe, a pitchfork, Excalibur itself.”
"His name is written on my skin, he scarred me, I've changed my entire shape for having fit within the enormity of his thoughts, and now the only words I know are lines and color."
"He thinks: the Babylonians were wrong; time is made of her."
"If this is what it is to burn, he thought, then I will be worth more as scattered ash than any of my unscathed pieces."
“It isn’t pretty, he wanted to say, it’s lonely, it’s desolate, it’s a chilling portrait of vastness. How ignorant are you to look at this and diminish it to some kind of trinket, are you dead? It’s the human condition! It’s the entire universe itself! It’s the depths of spacetime you utter fucking philistine and how dare you, how fucking dare you stand there and fail to weep? What kind of sad, unremarkable nothingness have you so callously lived that you can witness the splendor of her existence and not fall to your knees for having missed it, for having misunderstood it all this time? Pretty, that’s what you think this is? You think that’s all she’s capable of? You fool, she’s done the impossible. She has explained everything there is to know about the world in less than the time it took for your eyes to fully focus, and do you realize that I will spend a lifetime trying to do the same and never come close? This is an opus!, this is a triumph!, this is the meaning of life and you would think the answer would be satire, but it isn’t, it’s Truth. “She told the Truth like you could never dream of telling it, and I pity you, that you could see the inside of your own soul and reduce it like this, so pitilessly. So carelessly. With the vacuous deficiency of, Oh, this is pretty.”
are you kidding me???
every minute of this was so intoxicating and I am so so in love with this
