I don’t really care about anything in this book. I don’t care for the romance and I think the double POV or the two timelines are unnecessary. Soraya’s feelings and relationship with her family did made me feel something at least

This would’ve been perfect for me if it was a bit more character centric, yet at the same time I think this is a masterpiece. The author managed to make me feel so much complex emotions for all of his characters, all equally complex. The Three Terrors are monsters but I pitied the Third Terror and I like how the First Terror loves all of his sons. The Second Terror is terrifying and I have no positive feelings for him, but he is an amazing antagonist.
I love LOVE how the author shows that every single characters, even the nameless and the side characters, have depths and a life before the story. I love that we can see their thoughts and memories as the event happened. I was sad when the Emperor or the Terrors killed all of those civilians because I saw them as an actual person/characters. I was sad when Keema killed someone even though it was necessary becauce I can see his thoughts of how his friend will laughed at him and how he still think that he’ll returned to his loved ones. They all have lifes outside of the story and I love how it made me feels all sort of things while reading this book.
Because of that, I actually struggled to like Jun for a while. Like yeah, he felt sorry and clearly trying to redeemed himself but sometimes I’ll think of how unfair it is to his victims. I’ll probably hated him and never forgive him if it was in real life but since this is a book, I got attached to him. Also love the romance between Keema and Jun. Their moments are scarce but I ate it all up.
I admit it took me so long to started this because it intimidated me. The first few pages are confusing and while the writing is beautiful and feel magical, I don’t know if I was in the right mood. But I pushed through and before I know it I was already halfway done. The writing is so beautiful and immersive. It completely absorbed me into the story.
Anyway, The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez is an amazing adult fantasy and I BEG that western authors to started experimenting with different styles of storytelling.

Well… this is more mediocre than I expected. The way people are talking about this series, I was expecting to enjoy it more. Like, it wasn’t bad and I did followed the story well but also I don’t feel anything for the characters or the plot etc. It was just okay and that is pretty disappointing to me
I’m quickly finding out that short stories and anthology are not for me
I don’t get the point of this book tbh. A mediocre fantasy standalone from a mediocre fantasy series, unfortunately
