despite reading this book in a day, I  feel completely neutral about the entire experience. compared to her other books, this one felt very drawn out. I think the timeline threw me off with some of the conflicts causing the characters to not speak for, what, weeks at a time??

reading anything by julia armfield feels like such a chore with how dense the writing is. despite the slow-pace, the story was intriguing and the suspense was killing me. it was hard not to skip through miri’s pov to get back to leah.

I love messy women and books that are about nothing, but this took self deprecation and made it more depressing than funny.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 13%.
I think maybe the modern-person-gets-inserted-into-fantasy-world plot isn’t for me.

a pattern I’ve been noticing in these books is that when there is no further plot or character development, the chapters jump forward in time to get to the next plot point. not necessarily bad, but just feels kind of lazy.

I really thought there would be more of a dog plot line.

simply could not get into the characters, why is everyone so negative towards the fmc and why does she just take it!!

very good structure and pacing, but I felt so helpless watching the events play out, unable to step in to shake the characters from making more mistakes. this book brought back a lot of memories of my own roommate anxiety, so thanks for that!!

most of the time the author took the easy way out in favor of avoiding plot twists, which I feel like really makes or breaks a fantasy series. I think this was an enjoyable read, especially the banter and dynamic between characters, and will most likely continue the series, in hopes of the fantasy elements being developed.
