it's hard to convey such complex and visceral emotions in writing, let alone in a middle grade novel, but Palacio does it with such ease.

I was not expecting a political thriller about nuclear warfare, but I'm not mad about it.

Daniel Wallace deserves an MVP award and a massive snog for writing about the intersection of parent-child relationships and mythmaking.

I have faith in none of these adults because of their their issues, yet so much belief in all of these teenagers despite their issues.

is this awful writing? yes.

did I have an absolutely great time? also yes.

does Edward low-key have rizz and great comedic timing? unfortunately yes.

(but really the amount of growls and sighs had me ready to pass away. did Stephanie not have access to any other verbs to describe dialogue???)

a practically perfect female protagonist + a love interest with the maturity and intelligence of an almond = a very mid YA romance that barely has any romance

Sam and Sadie desperately need therapy to overcome their miscommunication, narcissistic tendencies, and paralyzing insecurities. and yet despite all of this, I still found myself rooting for them.

also "Chapter VII: The NPC" is among the best pieces of literature in the 21st century. second-person narration is so difficult and Zevin does it so perfectly. I think we'll be talking about that chapter and her narration for a long, long time.
