we need to give more respect to how beautiful Claire's coming-of-age narrative is.

(and we need to honor Jonas as the young adult heartthrob he is. like he saved a baby and then became a powerful leader and now is a good husband and dad? Lois Lowry really did us a favor and we have given her nothing in return.)

but Claire's coming-of-age narrative? stunning. beautiful. a great commentary on sacrifice and motherhood.

Mr. Daniels is my new teaching icon. Shay, however, would not survive a week in Miss Mulligan's classroom.

"But to abandon you, said the other, would be to leave a part of myself behind, and how can I do that when I do not know which part you are?" (59)

whimsical and dreamy, but still slaps you with reality at the most unexpected times.

if Oedipus Rex and Christianity had a baby with a very intriguing three acts followed by two more very boring acts, this is it.

this is truly the most unhinged novel I've ever read and I don't state that lightly.

(but to get soft for a moment, one of my kids from summer as a camp counselor passed away almost three weeks ago. the grief and the joy and the possibility of this book has began to heal me.)
