Well, that was an improvement from the first book in the Gamblers series, but then again anything would be. At least in this book it felt like the female main character actually liked the male main character.

Alright, I've had enough. I've been on a Lisa Kleypas reading kick for the past couple of weeks and I can't stand it anymore. I've been trying to recapture the original happy feeling I had while reading the Wallflowers and Hathaways, but her earlier work is just not good. There is a decidedly "rapey" feeling behind all of the interactions between the two main characters in Because You're Mine. There relationship had the scary vibe of a victim and abuser. Logan literally tells Maddy that he will use her body whenever he wants, that she won't enjoy it and she has no choice in the matter. Last time I checked that was called rape. I am so done.

Unfortunately, I was really bored through most of this book. I found myself skim reading through sections because I wasn't interested in the characters. I think I need to take a brake from reading romances, I've never read this many in a year and I think it's starting to make me a little crazy.

Lisa Kleypas's earlier books are definitely less enjoyable than the Wallflowers and Hathaways Series. With the Bow Street Runners Series it's clear that she hasn't yet perfected the formula that makes her later books so much fun to read.
Also, I guessed what all of the big plot twists would be less than a third into the book. So that spoiled my reading experience quite a bit since I was just waiting for the characters to catch up with what I had already figured out.

I actually enjoyed this entry in the Bow Street Runners series more than the first two. It reminded me a bit more of the Wallflowers and Hathaways series.

So, bullying a woman you "love" is romantic? No. No, it is not. What exactly did Damon have to sacrifice in this story? Nothing. What did Julia have to sacrifice? Everything.
The thing that upset me the most in this book, however, was the treatment of Pauline. Why was she treated like a villian? Through-out the story Damon insists that Julia needs a man to protect her. Well apparently because he only wanted Pauline for sex and not as a wife she doesn't deserve protecting. What the hell? Welcome to another story that puts virgins on a pedestal and vilifies a woman for having any kind of sexual experience. Oh, and William can sleep with anything that breaths and still be "good", but Pauline has an affair with one man and she's bad?
If this book had been written from Pauline's point of view it would be a depressing story of how men use and throw away women without a second thought for the consequences. But because the story was from Damon and Julia's pov it was a story of two self-centered people pretending to overcome things that aren't real issues and vilify a woman who had been used and cast aside after Damon became bored with her.
