The Particular Sadness of the Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

No, that wasn't a typo. I simply cannot recommend this book. The plot, in all of its magical realism, was unique enough to pique my interest, but not enough to sustain it. Upon being charmed by the title and seduced by the jacket, I quickly discovered that the fleeting moments of eloquence and excitement were just that-- fleeting. The looming feeling of "wait, this HAS to be going somewhere" was pretty much the only thing helping me trudge through this poorly-developed novel about a girl who could taste the cooks' emotions in the food she ate. To be perfectly honest, as slowly as I read, and as long as my to-read list is these days, I wish I would have simply abandoned this strange, underwhelming, albeit well-marketed book.

As hungry as you may very well be for this one, I must insist that you take a pass on the lemon cake.
