Short read, fast-paced, and suspenseful. I understand the Freida hype, but this isn't a complex mystery. While my mid-book guess was incredibly wrong (as usual), most thriller readers might find this a bit dull.
If you want to dabble in the mystery/thriller genre, I highly recommend it. Its short length makes it a good filler book between more complex series.

a cute YA cleanser. mom gave off HUGE gipsy rose’s mother vibes. i caught on pretty quickly. will be watching the movie. also Maddy opened a credit card and just started swiping?! Who’s paying for that.

this book gave me homicidal tendencies with the lack of smut and made feel things, mostly confusion and anger. read at your own risk because you will either DNF it or fall into a seven book (alleged) series.

it was cute
•the bones of the book were good but I craved something more from the characters
•the pacing is slightly slower
•i had clocked the mid-book twist within 100 pages which is usual for me.
the overall story and concept was there but true to the YA nature it left so much to be desired. i didn’t mind this book, but i got a bit bored near the end and skimmed the last couple chapters.

•best-friend brother, small town romance
•grumpy, protective, golden retriever MMC
•Dual POV (but it’s not evenly split)
I’m obsessed with Ford Grant. My own boyfriend called me out for grinning while reading this. The witty banter was stellar, relationship development between Ford, Rosie and Cora was cute and the romance had me giggling and kicking my feet (metaphorically). I hardly give out 5⭐️, especially a romance so read it.

It's like playing a game of poker, except all the cards are magic, grant you special powers at a negative cost, with a half-man, half-beast that only speaks riddles, keeps secrets, all while inhabiting a young girl's body. There's also some smut involved.
Jokes aside, I really enjoyed the mixed POVs which really let you get to know some of the other characters. However, in my case, once you start adding too many POVs and a split storyline, I tend to have a harder time following along. Low key need authors to start adding character maps or family trees.

•a fresh twist on fantasy, single POV, easy to digest narrative and simple world building. you could 100% just read for the vibes and not miss much.
•toss in a little forced proximity and fake courtship - which I’m told gets better in book two
•my only complaint was that this was little slower then I expected it to be. Don’t get me wrong, I was very invested in Elspeth and the plot, but sometimes the pacing of this book made me want to hurl my kindle into a wall.

•medium pace thriller that really picks up about the half way point. there is nothing boring about this book.
•the semi unreliable narrator makes you feel like you have it figured out. i found myself constantly guessing and changing my mind.
•the multiple twists make it high unlike you’ll truly guess the ending. *although there was in particular i wasn’t crazy about.
