The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

Maybe I cried at the end because of the beautiful way it was described and I'm satisfied even though I'm horribly sad.
I have never seen a book series that gave THIS much closure. Everything was answered. Absolutely everything. I gasped so many times because of huge plot reveals in this one - crazy.

I Can Not Stop Thinking About Laurent With A Stupidly Fancy Hat And It's All This Book's Fault, or, as I would also like to call it, come and take my soul cause I sure as hell don't have one anymore cause I gave it to the devil for more Laurent content. It worked.

This was terrible. I liked Vhalla in Air Awakens, because she was just a library apprentice who didn't know any better. But Vhalla in this one? Annoying at best, absolutely infuriating at worst.
You don't just hit the prince of your empire, no matter how mean he's being. And you certainly don't cry at every single opportunity you get, making your friends comfort you at all times without ever giving anything back. She's an awful friend, and a terrible person in general here.
Now, then we have the Mary Sue aspect. Literally every male character in this book likes Vhalla for whatever reason. Except the Emperor. Because he's Mean and Evil and Hates Her. And Fritz. Because he's gay. And all of that despite her constantly crying about how terrible and bad she looks and how she never eats or sleeps and wah wah wah yadda yadda.
Let's not mention mysteriously disappearing wounds - she got her limb broken, her back sliced open deeply, etc etc. and it's never mentioned again. This needed at least 3 more rounds of editing before being a finished product, let's be real.
At least Fritz and David (is that even his name? It was so forgettable) exist. But by how this is going, Fritz is the next to die and David will get his heart broken after being the support Vhalla needs, probably. Then maybe he'll also die. We'll see.

Again, this took around half of the book until this really caught my undivided attention, I had this shelved for over a year at 40 pages read because the beginning just doesn't captivate me.
The layout, the cover, the cool pages inbetween, all of this is AMAZING. Cool space-time theories, I love AIDAN as usual.
Not so cool? All the characters have the same personality. If you wanted to, you could exchange the cast from Illuminae and Gemina and nothing would change.
Everyone's dying and in danger but somehow they're still lol witty lol. Romance is somehow SUPER IMPORTANT and I just. Nah my dude.
But that's me being nitpicky. I sure love this book still. And who doesnlt love a little hacker spider gremlin girl addicted to energy drinks and brain eating slime worms.

This was so exquisite. So many funny parts, three absolutely delightful girls with their own aspirations and problems. Girls doing SCIENCE and PIRACY. Felicity killing it with mentions of menstruation. No overt sexualising of wlw relationships!
This book blessed me. I loved the wildflower metaphor for Felicity, I loved how Johanna loves BOTH the outside AND pretty dresses and would let the world burn for all dogs. I also loved how Felicity hated being at parties and went on about how bad and awkqard she is at socializing and Johanna assures her ALL OF THEM were feeling like it, everyone's just faking it until they make it. True words.
Also it had SEA DRAGONS, how cool is that?

I am not an avid reader of sci-fi. My usual go-to genre is YA fantasy. But also, I have a big love-hate relationship with YA because it's so easy - the reader is treated like a dumb reader all the time. Originally I bought this book for the cool, sparkly, starry cover but it turns out this was the refreshment I needed literature-wise.
I loved how I needed to use my brain sometimes, how you get all the details and yet have to think about some clues. The story was cool but I loved the narrative most of all. The suble manipulation tactics the narrator is using, how it was all told in interviews and journal entries.
Very, very refreshing and I will absolutely read the next books in the series as soon as possible.
I also very, very much loved the subtle focus on linguistics. It's very close to my heart. Vincent is so good.

I hated this book from start to finish, it was the worst thing I've read this year. I hated the characters, the story (what story), the writing. It was just so bad. 350 pages of a teenager WHINING. That's it. I wrote better things when I was 9.

Champion of the Scarlet Wolf: Book two by Ginn Hale

Took me a long time to finish. I adore Ginn Hale. Her storytelling is exquisite, everything about this is gorgeous. Elezar is one amazing beast of a protagonist. He deserved what he got in the end.
As usual, I don't like how reduced to sexuality love is. It happens often in m/m stories and I don't like it.
