I once vowed after the death of my father that if I ever met an Attano, I’d kill them. Instead, I married one.

Rivals to lovers.
Marriage of convenience.
Warring families.
Forbidden love.
Gangsters.

This trope list packed a punch 😂 Such a great combination though!

I could have sworn his grip locked a little tighter.
“Spoiled little heiress.”
I scoffed. “More like broke little heiress.”
His grip tightened, stealing a gasp from my chest. “
Not anymore, princess. I’m your daddy now.

To pay off a debt and save their family from bankruptcy, Camilla is married off to a competing, feuding family, but there’s murder and mayhem happening in the city, and obviously, our characters are right in the middle of it.

I rolled my eyes. “Yes, Daddy. Can I go now?” The moment his right dimple deepened with a smirk, I knew I’d made a mistake...
“I’d be very careful about calling me that again.”

This was a super fun steampunk-y fantasy, set in a post industrial era with banter, a unique world, and some great characters. It gets violent and dark, someone gets eaten alive by a fucking horse demon thing, and there’s trauma abound.

“I have lost my parents, my sister, my very flesh and bone, but I haven’t lost my fight. The day I have, you will need to carve the letters for my tomb. Because I will either die for what I love, or I will live forever.”

Milla and Nico were banter-y rivals come to life in this book. She threatens to kill him and he wants to…well

“You have a face that looks constantly pissed off, making you fundamentally unapproachable, and it's highly arousing to me.”

Can you make a review that’s just quotes? Because I have so many and they technically tell you all you need to know 😂 I loved Milla’s witty comebacks! She was a pretty great character, strong on her own but accepting, mostly, of help as well.

He took a step closer. A small one, yet there was a purpose in his stride. A careful approach—almost predatory. “Who did this to you, Milla?

It also had one of my fav tropes 🤭🫠 It also had the “my wife” and I am a HUGE fan of that 🔥

This book was about power, greed, control, and a blend of magic and science.

She shoved me deeper into Oblivion with each day that passed, but if I was already pegged for damnation, I might as well do it right.

The villain was a little predictable, as well the, um history reveal? But there were some surprises and lots of sadness at the end.

Thank you to R&R Book Tours and the author for this ARC! I’m only a fewww months late 😂

This was not good. It started off okay, for like 20 pages or so, but no. It really read like a bad standalone fantasy - everything was underdeveloped and rushed. The characters were one dimensional, the world building was non existent, and the I dunno, magic system was poorly explained. It was written a little child like, like Step 1 leads to Step 2 in how to build a rebellion in a fantasy novel, featuring scenarios that are surface level, easily solvable, and cliched.

There was also a ton of violence against children, something I didn’t really expect, but I guess when the army is exclusively made of up child soldiers… but like, how did this army even start when the Commanders were also child soldiers? Who has an army of children? Who leads them? Why was the emperor so powerful compared to people who were literally turned into monsters? World. Building.

This was mostly sex 😂 I liked both MMCs though, so I didn’t hate that 😂 but like, every chapter…

Anyway…
This would have been better with 50% less nicknames.
So many times.

I was going to take off a full star for the conflict at the end, yuck, but I did enjoy most of this book so I thought that wasn’t fair.

I’m also beginning to think that either I don’t like the word knot or I just don’t like the concept 😂 which is a huge issue because I love so many other aspects of omegaverse 🫠. But knot talk is making me cringe now so 🤷‍♀️🐓

Anyway, this was a fun quick read for those who like fake dating, mates, shifters (I wish the shifter part was more prominent, I kept forgetting they were wolves 😬), and smexy smex.

Update: I'm not going to write anything except
that book 2 ended on cliffhangers that were badly addressed in this book (the heir dying like, right away, and ACOTAR being a huge letdown) so that is one of my main reasons for disappointment

If I write any more it will just turn really negative and I don't want that because I still did enjoy this book, it just had so many problems too.

I feel like I’m betraying my favourite author by rating this book less than 5 stars 😭😭😭😭

“I made a vow, in this very room, should anyone bring you harm, you wear them as a promise of what becomes of those who dare touch the Ever Queen. Peel back the gold, and you will have answers to what became of traitors.

This was fun and I read it in 2 days! I liked all of the characters, I liked Erik’s bone jewelry *smirky smirk* and I liked how everything wrapped up and I’m excited for the next book in the series! Erik and Livia’s story did have a conclusion with this book though!

Okay, now for the not-so-positive stuff.

I really enjoyed the first 50% of the book, I zoomed through it, but then it both dragged on and moved too fast at the same time? I feel like the wording was meant to sound noble or something but it just lacked, I dunno, a naturalness? It may just be that I don’t like the writing style, not sure.

This also wasn’t enemies to lovers. They may have argued in the beginning but they’d always liked each other since they were kids. This isn't a negative or anything, it's just marketed as enemies to lovers but they'd always liked each other - even when they were enemies (I also have pretty high standards for "enemies").

I normally like a long ending but this one dragged on and on. I didn’t hate this or anything, especially since I want to read the next one, I just hoped for a little more.

Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
