Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

This first Bond novel is terrific. It gives a great character sketch of the most famous spy in literature before he became the playboy we now know and love. It's relatively low on action and high on character development, which I really enjoyed. Also, it's the book my husband and I listened to in the car up to Door County the weekend he proposed. (awwwwwwww. blech.)
Deliverance by James Dickey

Dickey's poetic prose really hit the mark in this one. The gorgeous descriptions and imagery are a perfect contrast to the awful situation the men find themselves in.
The Town and the City by Jack Kerouac

This is the book that changed my mind about Kerouac. It's his first novel, and very traditional in its structure and story (which I why I like it--I'm not a fan of his stream-of-consciousness writing). It's a true American novel that covers the good and bad times of one family. Really lovely and nearly perfect. I wish he'd done more like this.
Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

I'm not sure why, but it's not my favorite. I like it, but there are others he's done that are better.
