Not as intriguing as Jade City, the plot wasn't as enjoyable and the writing faulted a bit more in my opinion but still a solid novella and Fonda Lee's characters always seem to hit right!

I read this after coming across The Human Chair by Edogawa Rampo and not being able to find a copy of it anywhere to read, apparently this was inspired by that story and I enjoy Junji Ito anyway so thought I'd give it a go.

This is a weird, unusual story and I thought how could this be good? Well it was and it was actually quite creepy, I kind of wish it was longer! Hopefully I can get my hands on the original in the future.

And that's it, my first experience with some Mafia Romance is over and I'm heartbroken. I never want to leave Lorenzo behind.

I did not know this was YA going into it... that being said, the horror didn't really feel YA?? It's definitely tamer than what I'm used to but some of the language used in this book felt more adult, maybe that's just me? The YA feel was only really in it when they were talking about school life, outside of that the main plot point is the murders which didn't feel YA whatsoever to me... again, that might just be me?

Anyways, moving on. I was surprised and disappointed by this book, I thought it was going to be predictable and I was sure I knew who who the killer was and thought there was going to be this big shock reveal but it didn't end up being them and although I don't usually like a predictable plot, I wouldn't have minded in a slasher novel and I was left feeling disappointed that it didn't go the way I wanted as I thought it was better personally.

I was surprised though, at the fact that this was written so well, I've read nothing by Adam Cesare before so I really didn't have any expectations on his writing but I've also never read a slasher novel before, only watched the well known movies like Scream and I didn't expect a slasher novel to be done as well as shown on screen! As I was reading this I could fully imagine enjoying watching it all play out and I was rather impressed!

I think I will check the next book out as it was fun, easy and people seem to enjoy it more from what I've seen but I'm not sold on the reasoning behind the murders, that's my problem.. We'll see.
