A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore

very well written. the author definitely knows southern Wisconsin. sometimes I felt she was showing off a bit with all the classical music she mentioned. the book reflects the reality that life is not always happy, do not read this if you don't like or at least 'get' dark.
The last line of the book made light of all that had just proceeded. l am not sure how I feel about that after trudging though the book.

in the beginning I was discouraged because her life seemed so grim compared to her hopes as a young bride. but both she and I changed our view of the richness of her life. with her healing came growth for her daughter and granddaughter. it is never too late to embrace life with gusto.

the story kept me interested through out as I tried to figure out who the murder was. it is set in Italy during WWII. I am very glad I was not alive and living in Europe during that tome period. the moral dilemmas of choosing the high road or the one that keeps you alive would have been agonizing.

I like a good romance with a happy ending. I like all the in the head talking that Ave Marie does. I do similar things myself. It also lets you know exactly what she's thinking, which makes me identify with her.

the characters were all fully fleshed out. I cared about each one. it was interesting that they each had shAped their lives upon their perceptions not reality. and don't we all.
