Ripper by Isabel Allende

Excellent book. Up until the end the unexpected happened. I am cynical and believe that I can figure out the end of stories, I really appreciate the ones where I am wrong.
When the Emperor Was Divine by Julie Otsuka

straight forward quick read. if you have more time and are interested in Japanese internment I would recommend Snow Falling On Cedars.
We Are Water by Wally Lamb

I am a Wally Lamb fan, and I was not disappointed. Deep characters, told from many points of view.
Sacred Hearts by Sarah Dunant

Set in an Italian convent in the 1500s, just before mms became locked into their convents with no contact with the outside world, not even visually. Intrigue. It is history I don't know, in a setting (cloistered life) that interests me.
Maya's Notebook by Isabel Allende

I enjoyed the character development of Maya. she went from the vocabulary of a teenage tough to no swearing, I personally dislike swearing so this was noticeable to me and gave me a feeling of Maya. I did enjoy the naming of her dog. almost makes me want to get a dog and give him the same name.
Liars and Saints by Maile Meloy

a complicated very human family. all the. characters change and grow. the family at the end of the book is very different from the family at the beginning.
Truth & Beauty: A Friendship by Ann Patchett

I enjoyed this book about the friendship between two authors. I wish I had a friend like Ann, she seems full of patience and love. I appreciated the honest descriptions of Lucy's depression and struggles.
