This book has no business being as fun as it is. This could've easily been a Hannibal fanfiction (and I mean that as the highest compliment possible). I wish the final reveal would've been a bit less obvious but other than that, I have zero complaints. This was silly, morbid, entertaining, and a great read. Count it as one of the few straight romances I actually liked reading about.

As someone who's loved every installment of the Hunger Games series so far, this sadly felt like a mixed bag – interesting themes meet repetitive storytelling and (mostly) uncompelling characters. The messages around implicit submission and the call for a longterm, organized resistance are great but they're not always discussed as gracefully as previously done. In many ways, this felt like Suzanne Collins hitting us over the head with these themes over and over again, so that even the last person who didn't get the political message of this series would catch onto it.
That being said, I also have nice things to say about this book. I loved Maysilee's sassiness and her constant refusal to play along with the Capitol. She's undoubtedly my favorite character of the book (sorry, Haymitch). I also think the book is at its strongest when it's not name-dropping its themes ("implicit submission" literally came up six times), but instead lets the horrifying implications dawn on the reader on their own. This is why the ending of Part II and the scenes after Haymitch's return to district 12 –two moments where I falsely assumed he would get to breathe for a moment – hit so damn hard. His hopelessness when facing the Capitol's exertion of power and its vast cruelty was palpable.

Four lovely, surprisingly anti-classist, and enchanting short stories that almost reminded me of fables. Between the bird who gave up his life to fight wealth inequality, a king whose dreams made him question his privilege, a tale of exploitation under the disguise as friendship, and a guy who made a fool of himself in front of the right person, I actually don't know what my favorite story was. But I sure know that I'll keep reading Wilde because of his witty and creative charm!

As a fan of the movie, it was great to discover that Graham Green is not only a fantastic screenplay writer but also writes elegant prose. This was quite a fascinating read; I've never read a book with the disclaimer that it's merely the stepping stone for the screenplay/movie adaptation. And although that intention comes across through its vivid and poignant descriptions of mood, character, and scenery, it also led to this novel being both smooth and sharp.
Against Greene's intentions to create nothing more than an entertaining story, I found the plot almost less interesting than how the morals of some characters influenced their decisions –Anna Schmidt insisted that knowing the harmful actions of Harry didn't change her perception of him, whereas Rollo Martins struggled to unite the idolized memory of his longterm friend with the deadly consequences of his drug dealing. That made for a rather nuanced and intruiging depiction of morally gray characters which I enjoyed a lot.

I decided to pick this up because I went to a National Theatre Live screening of the play in March and absolutely loved it. I don't think I've read a play by Oscar Wilde before but this one is so funny and ridiculous, and a quick read on top of that too!
This suspense is terrible. I hope it will last.
