Super interesting. A little repetitive in places but every time I started to drift off, she brought me back in.
I don’t read a TON of non-fiction but this one threw out a big, juicy plot twist.

WOW. Wow. If there's one thing that Tahereh Mafi does EXTREMELY WELL (and there are many things, by the way) it's creating a very real and exquisite sense of emotion. The book had me breathless time and time again--going back to those chaotic but extremely stabilizing feelings of falling in proper, good love for the first time.

I ADORED Mercy House. I listened on audiobook and I was hooked from the first sentence. It didn't take me any time to get sucked into this glorious, brutal, beautiful world of Sister Evelyn and all the women who surround her.
I don't know, maybe I'm attempting to write a review too quickly after finishing it but I'm just settling into the glow of this book. I loved it for so many reasons that I don't have words for right now.

Code Name Hélène

Ariel Lawhon

DID NOT FINISH

Code Name Helene is full of adventure and masterful storytelling. In the hands of a lesser novelist, this story with all of the timelines and immersive descriptions could so quickly become muddy or convoluted but Ariel Lawhon keeps it all at once invigorating, thoughtful, and gripping.

I know that part of my 5-star rating goes to the audiobook production.
Ordinarily, audiobooks with multiple narrators will confuse me but it was the absolute perfect choice for this book. Schaitkin switches back and forth between narrators, story telling style, and even tense and so the various narrators helped keep everything very organized for me.
Parts of this book reminded me of the storytelling style of "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi--where we hear the perspectives from some people which shed light on the story at large, but who we never hear from again. I, personally, love that technique and it just made the story that much more rich for me.
