To Sway a Bard by Angela J. Ford
2.5
So much happens in so little pages, and I'm not quite sure if that's a good thing in this case. While the characters were fun, they didn't feel all that real, especially the connection between them. This just completely missed the mark for me. The premise sounded good and fun and like an easy and light read, but unfortunately it wasn't really that. It took me quite a while to get through and there was just nothing grabbing my attention.
Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata
4.0
Murata truly never fails. This was so weird and uncomfortable, but also thought provoking and intriguing.
Vanishing World explores and breakdowns a typical family unit, asking the question of what it would become when families are created without romantic and sexual love between the parents. It also asks what would happen to a family unit if cis-men could carry a child and birth it.
This breaks down everything we know and think about familial dynamics, sex, love and relationships.
I do wish this had explored same-sex relationships, or more of women choosing to live together and raise children as a unit rather than with men. In a world where IVF is the normal/ main way to conceive children and sex is abnormal or viewed as incest between married couples, I wished we could have seen the impact and effects this had on queer couples.
This book flips the 'it takes a whole village to raise a baby' saying onto its head. Examining how mothers would feel when they go through pregnancy and birth, only to have that baby immediately taken away and never know if the child they're playing with came from them.

Fable for the End of the World by Ava Reid
3.75
This is a quintessential YA dystopian and is just so fun. Ava Reid never fails to write a compelling world with unique characters.
I loved the dynamic between Mel and Nesa and wished it could have gone for longer so I had more of them. I really hope this isn't the last sapphic book from Reid, because this relationship was just so tender and sweet and I need more.
This book doesn't shy away from what makes it a dystopian. From the health system, to powerful and overbearing corporations to the consumption of violence and violence against women. This is such a timely book and discusses so many important topics.
I really hope this gets a sequel, I need answers and want to explore more of this world and the future these characters are fighting for.
Thank you to Penguin Aus for the stunning arc copy of the book!
