although my boss asked me to read this, i enjoyed it. the coach is from a polish family in chicago, which is close to home for me. but i liked his approach to leadership & creating a team & family. he has a way to treating people with respect & like humans & after reading it it makes me relieved that my boss has this pov for our team. dedication, hard work, honesty, treating people like humans, etc. a good book, even if you’re not a basketball fan. sometimes he did get in the weeds describing games, which is fine. but still pretty good.

i liked this and what it was trying to convey. bella was an interesting character & i liked how she sort of reclaimed her identity. and her sections were definitely the most interesting to read. the whole format of the book was cool too. some of it dragged but overall a fun read

wow. this book has been on my list for a while and i’m glad i finally read this, at this moment. stephanie foo is vulnerable and honest and i can’t imagine the amount of strength it took to write about the most raw and at times brutal parts of her childhood. to see the journey she took to heal, and to keep healing, is wonderful and inspiring. i found a lot of the information personally helpful to me and some of the quotes and therapies she goes to seemed great and to work for her. i think seeing a concrete example of how a path to healing can look, especially for something like cptsd, is - i hate to say it again because it’s repetitive but - helpful.

and i absolutely cried at her proposal story and wedding. 100000x infinity/10

i love the emotion, culture, and authenticity rum packs into her books and characters. i loved seeing yara go from closed off, aggressive, stuck, & powerless to empowered, healing, and more openhearted and honest. a beautiful case for finding people who care about you, keeping them close and letting them in, healing generational trauma and trying to be better than your parents.

also seeing palestinian struggle and culture and love and endurance represented is so important.

parts of this were repetitive and frustrating and you could sort of see where this story was going. but it was nice to see yara work out her life for herself.

i loved the concept for this book, i loved its queerness and how it was tied to the author's story & the creatures in the ocean. i found some chapters more compelling than others and i found that as it went on the transitions between the author's life & the bits about the creature got a bit clunky. i think some stories could've been tightened up a bit.

however, the way the author was able to tie the life/characteristics of sea creatures & the ocean to their life and story and career was beautiful and unique.

i found the flashback portions of the book way more interesting than the present day. there isn’t a lot of character development with the siblings and they just spend the whole time treating each other like shit. and then all of the sudden things just magically turn “better.” it’s a good book club pick which is where i got this copy 2 years ago lol

but it was entertaining & easy enough to read in a day.

this is one of the best books i've read in a while - the ~6 month library wait was worth it. HOWEVER. i will absolutely, 10000000% be buying my own copy. i highlighted so many things and need to go back and really let each chapter sink in and i want to take time to journal on the various things i highlighted.

this will really make you frustrated that freud gets talked about way more than adler. i know i wish i had heard of this philosophy sooner. i feel like it resonates with me way more. definitely, absolutely pick up a copy, be prepared to have everything you thought you knew wrecked - if only to build something better, stronger moving forward.

i wanted to devour this so quickly, but found that savoring it is really the way to go. also maybe read this with something lighter because this really makes you think so it's nice to have a balance.

this book was gripping, had a sense of foreboding - like always waiting for something worse to happen, and is a great & chilling & somewhat somber depiction of a mother on the brink of a mental breakdown, unfulfilled, and unsure & unwilling to make any self examination or change. Sammie was frustrating and you just wanted to shake her and seemed like quite the unreliable narrator. samson was chilling and i kept waiting for him to completely snap. monika was fleeting but when she was you could see how she moved a lot of the behavior/plot forward.

i am still pondering the ending. it was a bit confusing and left a lot to be desired. i think a lot of it comes down to characters just doing the same thing, not growing, not going anywhere. i loved how this book was written, the style was perfect & a lot of what i enjoy. idk i gotta come back to this perhaps.
