It’s hard to find the words. As a book, it was hard to get into at the beginning, but the second half was so much more engaging. I’ve DNF’ed it multiple times and am glad I finally finished.

As a person, I feel emotionally drained and thankful for people like RF Kuang who aren’t afraid to keep making people like me uncomfortable so we face the damage we perpetuate.

I never highlight in books, but I couldn’t stop with this one - so many good quotes:
“No one’s focused on how we’re all connected. We only think about how we suffer, individually.”
“And he wondered if there would ever be a day that came when all this was unnecessary, when white people would look and him and Anthony and simply listen, when their words would have worth and value because they were uttered, when they would not have to hide who they were, when they wouldn’t have to go through endless distortions just to be understood.”
“This is how colonialism works. It convinces us that the fallout from resistance is entirely our fault, that the immoral choice is resistance itself rather than the circumstances that demanded it.”
“That’s just what translation is, I think. That’s all speaking is. Listening to the other and trying to see past your own biases to glimpse what they’re trying to say. Showing yourself to the world, and hoping someone else understands.”
“Victory is not assured. Victory may be in the portents, but it must be urged there by violence, by suffering, by martyrs, by blood. Victory is wrought by ingenuity, persistence, and sacrifice. Victory is a game of inches, of historical contingencies where everything goes right because they have made it go right.”

And on a spoilery, ranting note,
it sucks so bad that the black woman is who is left to carry the weight of all of this. It sucks so bad that Ramy and Robin never told each other how they felt. It sucks so bad that their friend betrayed them and truly couldn’t understand and fight with them. It sucks so bad that I don’t even remember Robin’s real name.

Not quite sure where the plot was but had a good time while along for the ride.

I loved this. The pace was insane and so easy to get sucked into. The tropes? Immaculate. The yearning? Amazing. Exactly what I want from a fun, emotional rollercoaster of a romantasy.

The pace of this book was insane and made it so easy to get hooked and consume in a day. Also obsessed with the banter and a man with depth. There’s too many characters and places without a list or map, though. It made everything get confusing like 60% of the way through which was a bummer because it was hard to follow by the end.

Crazy Rich Asians in a different font? Sign me up. So much fun beginning to end. I feel guilty for feeling like the FMC is cringe, but I do and it’s the only thing I don’t absolutely love about this book.

America’ character development, Maxon’s general impossible-to-meet standard, the friendships, and the heart-wrenching romance make this book the best one.

The way Rachel sees the world and makes sense of God and her own story always makes me feel seen and super emotional. I don’t have to agree with everything to be so, so thankful for permission to wonder.

America is the most singularly infuriating main character I’ve ever read, and yet I’ve eaten this book up probably 10 times. I just love it.
