Heart of a Valkyrie by Melanie Karsak
5.0
A coming of age low fantasy (but heavy in the mythology and lore) historical fiction with a dash of beautiful romance. There are a few TWs including sexual assault, and violence, so please check those if you are sensitive. This was a great palate cleanser, comfort read, after many dark and heavy high fantasy reads. Reads more YA style due to the age of the protagonist, but that's not a bad thing.
As a lover of both Norse and Celtic mythology, and how Melanie has written these stories before, I love how she has found a way to weave both together into this story with Freydis and Brien (and Brigid)
This first novel follows the young life (ages 10-16) of Freydis as she leaves her quiet home life to become a Gythia. Along her way she find her heart stolen by an Irish slave. Freydis has big plans for her life but discovers that as the Norns weave, so does the trickster god play. All set in the time of the early spread of Christianity across the Norse world.
As usual, Melanie delivers a well researched and well written story full of intriguing and complex characters and the perfect touch of magic. I also loved the little Easter eggs to her previous works, seeing those names made my heart happy. I look forward to the next book!
