The Art of NASA: The Illustrations That Sold the Missions by Piers Bizony

such a cool art book. oh to be an in-house artist at nasa in the 60s...
i love the different art takes on space, like:
most artists: space can have a healthy speckling of white dots
russ arasmith: space = void. there is nothing back there. he wouldve loved vantablack
robert mccall: ~~galaxy print~~ space is full of colours and sparkles and dots and whimsy
hnnngngngnouh i want more space art books (this one isnt even mine ;_; library copy) (note: try the city basement 2nd hand book place they had a large scifi section)

an extremely slow read for me (some parts just dragged) but still enjoyable
the jeff vandermeer world is v interesting and unique, makes for a vivid reading experience (like god i wanna illustrate that). great exploration of climate apocalypse, and a hopeful take on reshaping and learning to live in sync with the new/old world
also i loved the characters (coming from someone who is usually an unnamed narrator truther)

(notes r in notion)

I have finally read every osemanverse book I'm interested in! Subconsciously been saving this for last cause like...thats MY representation and I was worried it'd be disappointing...

It ended up kinda going both ways? I really didn't like the start, the writing was too repetitive and just kept restating the same ideas. idk i'm also not into the tortured over not being able to love or whatever thing. but it did make the friendship = just important as romantic love realization even better. the classic osemanverse drama did not dissapoint. predictable but so satisfying B)

Also i will not bury this in my spoilers if u are googling am i gay quiz idrlabs is where its at do not click the kinsey scale do not pass go. https://www.idrlabs.com/sexual-orientation/test.php OK.

I loooooved Pip and Rooney so much. rooney especially was so great. and their banter at the start was absolute gold (apologise to oscar wilde right the fuck now......)

sunil my king. i was legit surprised cause i thought they'd dedicate the play to him after reading what the dedication was for. imagine hanging out w random jaffies for stress relief i love and respect his ways. i should wear my ace pin more i wanna be this guy to someone

mt rambling below:
Spoiler
this line was on like pg3 and wouldve made a stronger opener tbh
"Two people were kissing on the stairs, and I looked at them for a moment, unsure whether it was disgusting or whether it was the most romantic thing I'd ever seen in my life."
(the actual opening line is: "There were literally three separate couples sitting around the fire making out, like some sort of organised kissing orgy, and half of me was like, ew, and the other half was like, Wow, I sure do wish that was me.")
the book was...so repetitive :-( i wish it didnt repeat the same ideas over and over like a thesaurus dot com essay and explored some more nuance and variety instead -3-
like GIRL JUST GOOGLE THE FLAG ALREADY.

"'Yeah, and you're pretty quiet, aren't you?' I couldn't even deny that. 'Yeah.'"
yeh. #maincharactermoment

"To be honest, I didn't really want to join. What right did I have to join a society like this?" moooood. joining the pride groups when ur not in the big 4 classic L G B Ts is just like....im not gay enough to be here what if they kick me out....
my fave response when ppl ask 'which of the lgbts are u/what flavour of fruity...' has become 'im the plus B)'
i liked the pride soc in this book so much. appreciate addressing the conflict of 'how are u gonna be a safe space when u dont let in ppl who r questioning or unsure. they feel excluded from the mainstream how tf is it ok to exclude them here'

pip and rooney <3
"Rooney folded her arms. 'Well, I think putting on a Shakespeare is a bit more noteworthy than some little comedy play.' ' Some little comedy play? Apologise to Oscar Wilde right the fuck now!'"
"'You're just here to have fun. Well, I'm here to actually do something that means something.'
Pip shook her head. 'What the fuck are you talking about, dude? This is a theatre society. Not a political party.'
'Ugh, you're so annoying.'
'So are you!' There was silence for a moment.
'Please be in my society,' said Rooney. 'I need five members.'"
she's a sports anime protag trapped in the normal world fr
"-our new group chat that Pip had named 'A Midsummer Night's Dab'. Rooney argued with Pip about the group chat name in the group chat for several hours." we love 2 queens that make everyone else mute the chat <3

fried egg is such a cute nickname T_T i love rooney and georgia their friendship is epic
"'Fried egg is on her way.' 'Be hasty, egg'"
also the reassurance rooney gives on the day of the play was just so satisfying to read. the grand friendship gesture. literally everything to me

am i gay quiz takes another victim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"What if my sexuality was just the letter 'X', like the Kinsey Scale had told me?' WHO IS USING THE KINSEY SCALE. idrlabs #bffl https://www.idrlabs.com/sexual-orientation/test.php IT HAS QUADRANTS BESTIE

"'Could have gone harder with the pride flags,' Sunil said, narrowing his eyes. I couldn't tell whether he was joking." #kingshit. he would be an ace who supports the sex and magic stripes return to the pride flag

i also love the older ace cousin. incredible rep and just too common of an experience. unmarried women in families get pestered SO MUCH ace or not like. parents really say 'I want to raise you without the problems my parents raised me with, so I'm not gonna pressure you into a certain field of work or undermine your hobbies and interests, you can pursue whatever you want. Marriage and children is non-negotiable tho.' LIKE. imagine having just 1 more generation worth of foresight. relate this to ur experience being forced into a career u didnt want FOR 1 SECOND.

oh yes also i really liked the chapter titles. it was so satisfying that they were all a line/word from the coming chapter.
The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

2.5 stars but maybe im just too old for this
(just in a YA reading mood to get out of a slump rn)

I feel like this book didn't live up to the premise at all - it was about completely different topics and pretty much didn't say anything on 'the rest of us' who aren't chosen ones. Most of it felt completely random. Just a bunch of things happening with no real direction...I guess that's life? But it doesn't make for a very interesting book ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

good read ;◡;
the writing was a bit too simple for me to fully get into it and the 1st half was kinda sparse but otherwise solid

good read! very short and comfortable. like the oat milk ad with the oat milk edited out
not really heavy or hard-hitting, but i think if you need to refresh your mindset and feel more positively about life its a good read. the sort of book that feels like a +2 to ur kindness stat
