this was my first time reading a philosophy book literally ever and i think my smooth stem brain just got a new ridge from trying to understand the barrage of words and namedrops
the ideas in this book are super interesting but the format was a little too frustrating. i was imagining listening to a lecture instead of reading a book to follow the stream of consciousness style but i definitely lost the thread partway thru the tuning chapter nd only picked it up in uncanny valley

(notes r in dot notebook)
curious to read an ecology book now and see if i can look at it with fresh eyes

v interesting read! i was fully engaged. emotional straightforward writing.

genuine question were the parents meant to be sympathetic characters in any way? like.
Spoiler
killing a dog out of aggression???? lying to ur kid and saying that HIS MUM DIED???? like come on that is fucked up??? in what universe is this a normal thing to do and/or be forgiven for. justifiably yea no one should have to live with the dad after that. the mum too? don't put ur son in situations u know cause him distress,,, its not that deep is it? why did she take him to the mall after he showed up at her house fully traumatized bruh. he's been ur kid for 15 years and u still dont treat him like he wants to be treated. most sympathetic characters were christopher and toby. im so glad toby the rat made it ok. rebranding to doestheratdie.com. also i liked how the train characters were portrayed. just the unbothered crassness of the general public. they see a kid on the luggage shelf and be like "u ok there mate? kinda weird" and then move on and stay in their lane. also the diamond socked hipster who had his hero moment of the day

i started sweating when the math problem came up like. i have to write this proof if i read the appendix without writing this proof i will forever be worse at math than a fictional A level exam taker i dont even know what A levels ARE. anyway i wrote the proof and it was ok

i read this book in line at the covid vaccination clinic and BOY am i glad i picked smth exciting and fast paced cause i was waiting outside in the cold for 2 HOURS and i think i wouldve straight up passed out at melbourne showgrounds if i was reading smth even slightly more boring (i was also looping exposed by dance gavin dance so i guess thats what the ark sounds like now. sidenote dance gavin dance is an example of such a weird band concept like. its been around so long that none of the original members r even in the band anymore, but its somehow still the same band. like it became a separate entity from the members and just continues w/o them) (unfortunately (well. fortunately for the covid line situation) i am currently hyperfixating on bands/music/being in a band (my friend said i could join their band if i got better at guitar ....to reap the rewards of being a part of smth fun i must face the mortifying ordeal of learning an instrument i GUESS))

hm yes thoughts on the book:
v exciting to read. characters were gr8. has the classic osemanverse ~drama~ and over-the-top-ness. ms oseman really went off with the ark on stage vs the flood of fans

so i was vaguely commenting on the story to my sis while reading and near the end i was like *GASP*. MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH??? and not even 2 seconds later she's like 'oh? the alcoholic?' OK SHERLOCK HOW DID U DEDUCE THIS FROM THE SCRAPS OF INFO IVE GIVEN U. the last comment i made was when the bathroom knife scene happened. shes kind of a genius huh.

Really liked this! This book has a lot going for it but first I need to mention: THE COVERS!! All versions I've seen of these covers are fantastic and the designs are so cohesive

3 stars but i did enjoy it. I'm kinda surprised that this is so bleak of a ya. like usually atleast the protagonist is very rebellious and fights back but cassia takes p much the whole book to develop into a rebellious protag and takes the punches the rest of the time.
I feel like I wouldve enjoyed this more when I was younger (obvs) but still. decent read

I probably won't be reading the rest of the series (when do I ever) but i am interested to see where this story goes....

4.5 I love murderbot :^)
plot a little dry but murderbot is a fantastic narrator
so charming and funny also this book inspired me to go work on my own scifi story (even tho I don't plan on ever making a book it was still fun)

also I won't dox them but I like to read the 1 star reviews of books I enjoy to get a balanced opinion and look at this 1star review quote: "basically this is one of those asexual teenagers who have the emotional depth of a soap bubble film and the book comes across as yet another failed attempt at "Touchy-Feely" tree hugging SF , which of course never works" I THOUGHT THEY MEANT ME NOT MURDERBOT....how would a reviewer vague about me specifically idk, either way new twitter bio.
anyway I'm exactly the target demographic which is why touchy feely scifi works on me every single time
if u place the in the 3rd quadrant of idr labs sexuality quiz or have ever googled raads-r test u'll probs enjoy this book lmaooo
