Redbanks writes beautifully about the delicate balance between old and new, weaving heredity and necessity throughout this book. A perfect companion to "Landmarks" and "H is for Hawk".
Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living by Manjula Martin

Majula Martin has assembled a brilliant, diverse set of perspectives on what it means to “make it” as a creator in the modern age. Even though the book is aimed at writers I found these essays relevant to all kinds of creative pursuits. I haven’t read a single volume in recent memory that has made me shout “YES” out loud quite as many times over the course of a single sitting. This is a collection creators of all stripes have been waiting for.
The Discovery of Jeanne Baret: A Story of Science, the High Seas, and the First Woman to Circumnavigate the Globe by Glynis Ridley

A brilliantly researched and deeply moving account of Jeanne Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe as the disguised assistant to a naturalist on a French voyage. This book gave me everything I could’ve possibly wanted: disguise and intrigue, first-hand accounts of life at sea in the 1700s, naturalists’ finds from around the world, and a stunning account of one woman’s bravery and determination at a time when her sex and class would have otherwise bound her to a life of serfdom. Highly, highly recommended.
