I was very surprised to be so disappointed with this book after all the hype. I think a big part of it is that it was written for and about 2012, and that's where it belongs. My 2022 brain can't quite get behind everything in it.

Also, while I think books provoking strong emotions is a good thing, some plot points of this one made me so angry that I wasn't enjoying it any longer. 🙃

Still, I definitely wouldn't call it a *bad* book. There's a reason it was so popular, and I definitely have to give it its due for its influence on the genre. But I guess this particular one just wasn't for me. Oh well.

I wanted it to be as good as or better than The Guest List, and it did not deliver on that. :( Partially my fault for going in with those expectations, but so it goes.

The story was interesting, but the pacing was off.

I've literally never felt so seen in my entire life. This book taught me so much about who I am and so much about sexuality in society as well. It has inspired me to officially embrace my demi/asexuality. I want every human being to read this book.

I don't know what I was expecting this book to be, only knowing it's a beloved classic, but it completely surprised me in so many ways. It was so gorgeous and honest and unapologetic. I can 1000% see why it's considered a classic.

Knocked down half a star because I personally didn't love it being written in the dialect (though I totally get why). Just made it a little hard to read at times. Also a little rambly at times. But otherwise perfect.

Not nearly as good as book 1 and I can feel it starting to go completely off the rails. I'll give book 3 a try but I'm not really excited.

Edit almost 2 years later: changing to 3 stars because I know I didn't really enjoy this one, but 2.5 feels unnecessarily harsh. 💀 Especially considering how good the series is as a whole.

I liked it, but I wanted it to be something else. I wanted more of the romance, less of the endless descriptions.

I think this is a really great book for teens to learn about a variety of trans/gender identity issues. However, I am 29. 😂 It was a little too teen-ish for me. Fun and important story, though!

My first time rereading it (age 29) since English class in 7th grade (age 12 or 13). My god, it holds up.

I'm pretty sure this was the first book to ever make me cry, and it was probably also one of my first very real-life YA books (rather than happy ending kid books). It has stuck with me since the age of 12 and I can't believe I haven't reread it until now.

Ponyboy's voice is so crystal clear, and his relationships with his brothers and his buddies are so beautiful and tender and relateable. I also have to mention how much I love that the tough boys in this story aren't afraid to show emotion and be vulnerable with each other.

This book will never be irrelevant.
