I genuinely had mixed feelings about this book. There were parts that I loved and there were parts that had me so confused.
The time lines were the biggest issue I had, there were gaps that had me so confused. Years pass between chapters, with little to no explanation as to what happened during the time past.
I just wish that there was a bit more character building, I would have loved to have seen how the main character learnt her skills, what happened to her sister during her time after she was sold and more background on the villain.
I can only hope that there will be the expansion of these characters in the books to follow in this trilogy.

A great tale of overcoming adversity and
survival.
Lina is such an inspiring character - being born in a Russian prison camp and never having seen the outside world, her trek into the Siberian wilderness to find her grandmother and then later to rescue her mother was such a great story line.
This story is filled with Russian folklore and the magic made it a wonderful read.
Suitable for ages 13 years and older - not the recommended 9 years and older due to the darker side of WW2

I had such high hopes for this book, but unfortunatley it felt a bit lackluster. The pacing was a bit slow for my taste and I think that's the main reason why it took me so long to actually finish the book. Don't get me wrong, the world building was brilliant. I was submerged into a beautiful fantasy world that was brilliantly discriptive. I was let down by the slow start and it felt like it was dragging most of the time. The story had underlying touches about how woman have been supressed and looked down upon and how throughout history a womans place was to always be one step behind a man. There were parts that had me furious, about how a woman always had to worry about how her actions would be percived as inproper and how woman were not allowed to do certian things as it would be frowned upon. If your looking for a book that shows character development and a beautiful setting then this is the one for you.
