Don't read Hell Followed With Us, read this instead.

It's a much better story with a gothic setting and a visceral deconstruction of womanhood, and even the reductive ideals of manhood, in a much less advanced time period.

My only complaint is I wish that the medium angle was used more often, but that's literally my only complaint.

Too much religious imagery and biblical references makes my head spin, too much unnecessary gore just annoys me, and too much focus on the characters being what they are instead of who they are.
Benji is trans. Nicolas is autistic. All the religious white people are evil homophobic, and transphobic. They brought upon the end of the world.

To be honest, this book makes my head spin in a bad way. The pacing is really slow then really fast. The characters are not very fleshed out, to be honest. Most of the ALC members were not very memorable for me besides Erin and Nicolas, who, is... interesting I guess. Mostly because he used to be an Angel.

In all honesty, this book disappointed me on a lot of fronts. For instance, Mother Woodside is talked up so much but when she's finally revealed in the book I'm very disappointed about how not imposing she is. I would've liked exploring the dynamics between the ALC more, or Benji figuring out more parts of his identity rather than just being trans.

My biggest disappointment, though? I was really invested in Theodore seemingly wanting to be good but ultimately too religiously traumatized and cowardly to be good. I wish Theodore didn't die or betray Benji, it is sad to see the parallels between them - the one who succeeded in breaking free of their religious trauma and the one who couldn't manage. I feel like that whole plotline was kind of wasted.

This book was okay. I guess.
