At First Spite by Olivia Dade

This is my 4th Olivia Dade and by far my least favourite.

Major good point: I still really liked how she handled the fat representation, it's not the main topic of the book so it's only mentioned a few times when relevant (like when it has an impact on something that other characters don't realise).

Unfortunately I found the two MC annoying each in their own way, they are both in their late 30s but she acts like she's 20 and he acts like he's 60. This man doesn't know a single popular meme and you know that because she is throwing SO MANY at him/you. Also they refer to google as Professor Google at least two dozen times and I cringed so bad.

And I feel like Dade wanted to tackle too many themes in one book, some pretty heavy, while remaining quite funny and the tonal shift can be a bit rough at times.

A very interesting concept and discussion on our impact on species extinction. I think I would have preferred it to be longer though because it is multiple POVs so in the end we have a very limited time to explore each of them.

This continues to be an enjoyable series, mostly because I really like the characters and I find their personal growth interesting.

This book is fine if you are able to set your brain aside and just vibe. As soon as you start thinking about it, well… the story doesn’t make a lot of sense. Everything revolves around two almost 30 years old spending a whole year annoying each other daily then acting like horny teenagers, instead of having one (1) conversation to clear things up. The other main plot point is a quest to save the hotel by searching for the owners of engagement/wedding rings lost and found over the past decades hoping some people might feel inclined to give a reward, instead of… I don’t know… sell them!?
