This book is truly mesmerizing. Golden completely immerses the reader into a rich, exotic culture of the Geisha of WWII Japan. The book begins with a young fisherman's daughter in a coastal village named Chiyo. Her sister and she are taken against their will to a different town and split apart. The sister is forced to a brothel while Chiyo works under the strict "Mother" and "Granny" alongside the awkard "Pumpkin." Here the antagonist is introduced: the viscious Hatsumomo who will stop at nothing to maintain her reputation as a renowned geisha, even if that means completely destroying Chiyo. Chiyo continues her young life that is now meaningless until she meets the love of her life, the Chairman. This defining moment causes her to pledge herself to the art of the geisha and she begins her lessons under Mameha. What truly is a geisha, and how much can a WWII Japanese woman really accomplish? These questions among others are explored throughout this stunning novel. This is one to read more than once.
This book gave me insight to possible cover ups that are contained in the Catholic church. This book is one of my favorites. It is suspenseful, well-written and I learned many random facts that I never would have known without reading this book.
This book started a large trend in my life of reading the Harry Potter series. It is very fun to read and keeps you wanting more. I have ready at least thirty times.
This book cannot be described with merely "5 stars." Martin's absolute command of the plot, characters, setting and every other aspect of the book is mesmerizing. Yes, dragons, magic, swords and hard to pronounce lands are seen in this series, but Martin's intricate storytelling abilities bring this fantasy to a new level. The plot twists and cliffhangers make the reader yearn for more and he does not dissapoint at any time. I think this deserves a spot above Lord of the Rings.
The rare book that hurts to finish it. Luckily I just ordered the sequel. High fantasy at its best! True-to-life lessons, intricate system of magic, masterful storytelling, and believable yet complex characters.
This novel tells the story of Kvothe, a hero whose flaming-red hair matches his personality and wit perfectly. His struggles as a performer and street rat in childhood lead to his undertaking the life of a student in the renowned University. His successes and failures in the past are mingled with small interludes that tell the story of the present day, and this style of writing makes for quite an exciting read.

Truly a masterpiece! reading Metamorphoses was one of the greatest decisions I have made regarding addition to my general knowledge. While there is no way I will remember every detail of the many, many myths presented by Ovid, I am now much more familiar with the Greek/Roman pantheon and the mythology thereof. I'm excited to stumble across the next mythological reference in another work: hopefully I'll be able to recognize it!
Ovid's presentation and Raeburn's translation are stunning and present a passionate, violent, and downright satirical image of classical divinity. The beauty and exotic nature of Mediterranean culture is also wonderfully captured in this epic poem.

I've been obsessed with Caitlin's content lately- her Youtube channel, Ask a Mortician, is a witty, macabre, and fun way to learn a little about death. This book is like the videos, but in readable form. She talks about different ways humans deal with death, including what they do with remains, how they celebrate or grieve the dead, and her experiences in these different places. Her work has definitely pushed me into the "death positive" movement, which advocates for open discussion of death, moving away from traditional funeral industrial complex burials, and embracing eco-friendly burials.
Great companion to her first book "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"

A head-first dive into the funeral industry- what Caitlin has experienced working as a crematory operator. A frank discussion on how corpses look, what it's like dealing with grieving families, how we as a culture can make death a less taboo, and more respected aspect every human must face.
If you go into this King work expecting blood and horror, you'll get a little bit of the blood, but very little horror. Written much like a fairy tale, this fantasy is light enough to be read at night, but not so light that you lose King's style. A true fan will discover connections to other King works.
