Becoming by Michelle Obama
5.0
Fantastic book, one that inspires and captivates. Michelle Obama opens herself up in the most graceful way, all the while addressing everything you’ve wondered about her life and the Obamas life before, during, and after the White House. This book opened my eyes to the intelligent ways that we can work to be more inclusive and lift others up. She shows us that we can use our stories and our platforms, however large, to make real and meaningful change in the world. Without being overly political, she speaks to the heart of her family which I could feel reflected in mine. Definitely recommend as a great book to read and then reflect on.
The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton

Well, I am glad I pushed through to the last third of the book when it actually became enticing. This is a very full, dry book before then, with so many characters and plot lines that it almost seems as though the ending was a bit of an attempt to tidy up the beginning. Wouldn’t recommend and won’t be re-reading. I’d be curious to read another book written by Kate Morton though.
The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray

Overall, I thought this book was extremely well written and really took readers into new territory. I found myself feeling sympathetic for this couple who broke the law, and hoping for the best for some of the women she meets in jail. The themes of family and it’s complications are well woven, without over explaining.

Really well written! Very engaging book, even though the nitty gritty political parts were sometimes a bit dry, I really enjoyed learning about them. This book makes me proud to be from the Midwest and helps me view South Bend and local politics differently.

“Life didn’t progress unswervingly, it didn’t accumulate, it was wiped as clean as the board at the end of the night and if we kept our spirits up, it meant we were inexhaustible.” -pg 351
A truly accurate representation of the heartbreak of the hospitality industry. It’s never ever ever just dinner.
The perfect match to Anthony Boudain’s Kitchen Confidential, with the perspective from across the pass.

Really really well written! I love it when a book plunged me into a completely new background than I’m used to.

A definite classic of course. So many lessons in one book, although many are out of date. Highly recommend setting aside a few hours to get lost in this book because it can be dull if you stop and start it often.
