The writing (and narration) is done so incredibly well and the storyline is interesting albeit predictable. The ending was very surprising though, that I enjoyed a lot. The characters themselves felt very flat and one dimensional. There was little to no grey zones within the characters which made it a little boring for me at some times. However it's very inspiring how dedicated the author was about the setting and accuracies in his writing!
Regardless of all that, it's a fun and cute read with an exciting setting (despite some of the horrific themes).
Although the abuse is very apparent in the story and actually fucked up, it's still a lighthearted story. Like the author doesn't really focus on the impact of all the abuse has on psychology and mostly focuses on developing the plot.
A heartwarming story. Rather than being stuck on the things we cannot change, the characters learn to come to terms with it and this alone brings change with it.
The story has a very melancholic feelings to it, edging between comfort and sadness.
I truly enjoyed it so much. It's been a while since I've finished a book this quickly. I expected to cry more but honestly it made me smile more than it made upset. There were a few tears here and there but nothing I couldn't handle.
The writing was great, sometimes so good that I felt like I was wearing the skin of the protagonist which I disliked so much.
I'm so conflicted about this book, it's not bad whatsoever but it wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be. Especially with such gorgeous cover, interesting concept and great writing. I found that the characters fell flat and the ending... I don't even want to elaborate on the ending.
Lastly, once part II begon, I felt like the story started dragging on and so many things were happening at once. Hence my 3 stars, I really did enjoy this book a lot up till a certain point and the ending does not take away from that fact + great writing.

Despite it being nearly a year since I've read this, I still remember this book clearly.
The first two parts trick you into thinking this is a fun and exciting young adult fantasy book but once the third part start you are body-slammed into a graphic retelling of war and its cruel and unbearable harvest.
Painfully detailed, and almost unbearably so, R.F. Kuang writes about what it means to be an unwanted 'chosen one'. The protagonist is tasked with an insurmountable task and doesn't know how to go on about it. Meanwhile, she still has to cope with racism, misogyny and abuse.
I know that it doesn't really sound appealing but the writing, the characterisation and the setting are written so incredibly well. I also appreciate how the author subtly shows how victims of violence inevitably birth more victims.
Definitely a big recommendation if you like fantasy and can stomach explicitly written horrors.

I read it in one sitting, like as soon as I finished wicked king. I don't regret anything.
I loved this trilogy so much, the world building was amazing and the story itself was incredible. At no point did I know where the story was heading and I was enthralled by it. I literally could not stop reading.
The only thing that left me a slightly underwhelmed was the romance. I don't mind that romance was a subplot to this book, in fact I like it like that. It's just... The tension and chemistry between the love interests was so good at first but it just felt lacking in the third book. I was expecting it to be more epic but rather felt slightly underwhelmed in the climactic scenes.
But overall, this was a great reading experience, especially for those who love a good fantasy story with scheming, betrayals and bunch of plot twists.
