Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman

I read this because I saw a reel that said it genuinely creeped the reader out, they had to put the book down a few times because of it.
Unfortunately, this was the worst thing I’ve read in a while. Not scary, just cringey attempts at humor (bc there’s no way the author thought his descriptions were scary with all the stupid commentary from the MC) and terrible writing. The concept seemed really interesting, and having Fox News watchers be the horror was amusing, but the writing was atrocious. The all caps, excessive periods and line breaks were so elementary, my third graders know not to use emphasis so excesssively. There’s no way the author didn’t mean for this to be a comedy book instead of a horror book, considering the descriptions and the characters actions. Like after the mom eats his year the narrator says “mmm mmm mmm! Yummy in the tummy!” And ‘“AAAHHHHHHHHH” Noah shrieked.’ With the caps and all. Obviously he shrieked. And “mom flipped on top of him. Timberrrr!”. Genuinely the most childish writing I’ve read in an adult book lol. And those were all on the same page spread. Beyond that, the MC’s choices were not believable at all. Who goes to their parents’ house, who they haven’t heard from in weeks, sees it ransacked, and stops to reminisce on several pictures that are smashed on the ground to describe the MC’s childhood and family dynamics? A writer who doesn’t know how to build character backgrounds in an effective way, that’s who. This was the first 1/10 of the book. I’m skimming the rest.
