It moved too slow for me and was too much tell and not enough show. The magic system was hard to keep track of but the last few chapters did redeem it a bit for me. Glad I finished. Not sure if I’ll read the next one though.

Pip Williams is the kind of author that encourages me to read outside of my usual genres. Historical fiction isn’t really my thing usually (unless it’s full of witches and magic) but I really enjoyed this one and The Dictionary of Lost Words. Will definitely continue to read Pip’s work.

I think her adult fantasy just isn’t for me. I’ve read both of them now and they feel the same, the magic system is bananas convenient, the story beats are identical, the twists are easily predictable waaayyyy too early in the story and the protagonists just seem so dense that they can’t figure it out. But her writing and the atmosphere she creates is beautiful.
