It's light-hearted and fun with spice. Cheese for days but done in a way that you still really end up liking the the characters. Fun holiday romance. Good Xmas read.

I'll preface this with saying this book was not what I thought it was going to be going in and I wasn't enjoying it. So I put it in a pile and came back to it knowing now what the book was and picked it up prepared. I wanted to fuck with this book so badly but I couldn't. The jumbled rants and tirades in the book took me out of the horror, which I don't think was the author intention. I think her anger (justifiable ofc) was meant to add to the horror and for me it just didn't. It added confusion and took me right out of all the good parts of the book. At the end it felt like she couldnt decided how to end so she put all her ideas on some weird montage/time flash scene. I think I understood what the author was trying to do but maybe I didn't Totally fair that this book just might not be meant for me which is why I don't vibe with it. Excellent horror elements in part 2, was the best part of the book and where her love of the genre really shone. So ham-fisted with metaphors it made me wanna puke.

Not as good of a follow up, dragged in parts. It didn't feel as cohesive a story as Fourth Wing but I still enjoyed it. I feel like the description of the action was patchy and wasn't clear what was going on. I enjoy parts of Xaden and Violet's relationship but a lot of it felt cringe. Again noothing new from the first book but easier to overlook in Fourth Wing as the other plot held up so well and was woven so neatly. I can deal with romance cringe if there's a pay off elsewhere. This book feels all over the place and I easily became frustrated with the characters choices with little understanding to how they came to those choices. Felt like the author was done writing about it so just decided that the character was over it and that's it. Wanted to throw the book in rage at the mind reader bit. Soooo sick of this trope. The bond is enough and already too tropey. Do we need to add Edward vibes in there? and the gaslighting that he does to Violet when she's rightly pissed at him for withholding info.

If you're reading this following the ACOTAR series you might need an adjustment. It's a much slower build up and I didn't instantly connect with the characters. Found the love triangle a bit forced. I think I'll get into to the series as it goes on. Interesting enough premise to keep me reading but didn't hook me to the point where I couldn't put it down. I found the writing a bit clunky and it just didnt flow as well as other SJM books I've read. Similar vibes to ACOFAS which was my least favorite of the series. People RAVE about this series though so I'll persist. As usual for SJM it really ramps up the action in the last couple of chapters.
