First half was interesting, but it felt dragged out somewhere along the way. I feel like more could've been done with the scene with the presumably trans man in the onsen because the narrative didn't feel like it was trying to be transphobic and more like a sincere desire to explore transness, but it fell somewhat flat in what more it could have done there (i.e. wondering how trans people feel having to live up to cis expectations of gender and beauty). I dunno, it was great at first but bored me eventually.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

This is probably my sign to get therapy, but thank you, Ocean Vuong.
In all seriousness, this was such an amazing read, and even if Vuong specializes in poetry, the way he wrote this novel just makes words come to life and translates really well in long-form. I don't know if I'll ever find a book that has touched me the way Vuong reached straight into my heart and squeezed it the way this book did. Absolutely recommend to anyone and everyone.
I don't normally enjoy classics much, but even when I had to read this for class, I found myself enjoying it quite a lot. The beginning is sluggish as usual, but maybe 60 pages in and I was really immersed. I guess it's the part of me that loves gossip, but I enjoyed the convoluted relationships even if nobody in this book is likable whatsoever.
