No One Is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood
4.0
interesting book. i haven't read anything like it before and would like to find more like it. the author is very funny. sometimes it was hard for me to read because it sometimes felt like poetry, but I like the way it's structured. the book is split in two parts - the first half is about the absurd lives we live consumed by the internet (the portal) and the second half is about navigating real life outside the portal when you're confronted with a very real, very human experience, in this case it's her late niece's disability and consequent passing. This book is both a reminder to touch grass and an examination of what the fuck that even means anymore - everything offline feels saturated with online speak, online references, connections to each other through the Portal. memes!! it all feels so incredibly silly and pointless when you're out there in the Real World going through the worst thing imaginable. yet, you still feel compelled to doomscroll and look at Jason Momoa thirst traps. what a weird world we live in.

Everything I Know About Love: A Memoir by Dolly Alderton

sweet <3 love is everywhere, cherish it and hold it close. it’s nothing revolutionary, but a good read to remind you that your greatest love will be with yourself and your friends. good book to remind you to romanticize your life. all the best parts about the book were when she got really honest about herself all the bad stuff like jealousy and self esteem and stuff. worst parts are the recipes and sarcastic emails. it’s funny but i just liked the other stuff more. good book to listen to.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
ok so i didnt realize it was part 1 and 2. will have to come back to finish it all. it surprised me just how young all the girls felt, especially Jo. She's the best character obviously but she really is just a girl in this. crazy. also it was really christian
Lapvona by Ottessa Moshfegh

hm..... i've never read anything like this before and I appreciated the challenge. It was weird and gross and made me confront disturbing images that if I knew were in the book initially I probably wouldn't have read it. Buuuuut. idk. I didn't care for any of the characters. I felt no love or hate or sympathy or disdain for Marek, Jude, Agata, Villiam, anyone really. Ina was kinda chill. But it didn't matter to me what happened to them and I kinda wish it had. And maybe it's because my comprehension skills aren't the greatest, but I just don't know if I actually understand what this book is About. I kind of understood why the characters (specifically Jude and Marek) behaved the way they did with their guilt and shame and faith but only because it was demonstrated over and over again. Like Moshfegh just wrote that Marek hurt himself for God a bunch of times and I was like yeah ok I get it now. The writing was ok. I'm starting to think I don't like Moshfegh very much but I think I'll try out Eileen. I think the pacing was good and I liked how information was revealed, there was always something new happening and I appreciated that. I didn't hate this book but I didn't love it. I think a perfectly average 2.5 stars is appropriate here.
That Time of Year by Marie NDiaye

I liked this. I've never really read short stories like this and I liked this one. It was creepy and unnerving but not because anything was outright creepy. All the creepiness came from kind of simple, harmless things/behaviors. it's interesting. I read it in one go, which I love. will definitely seek out more of this.
Slow Days, Fast Company: The World, the Flesh, and L.A. by Eve Babitz

Great stories! Babitz is funny and witty and I want her to write about me. If she did it might honestly be kinda brutal because she sees people very clearly, the kind of clarity you get when you're kinda high and think to yourself oh my god everyone is ACTING but still I want her to write about me. She wrote these stories as if I was there with her in person at Red Lion sharing fries and drinking drinks. Maybe an espresso martini. Or tequila. She likes tequila and I like tequila. We could be friends. My favorite story was Bakersfield I think. I love that she loves LA. I also love LA. Can't wait to read more of her work!
