“I was more than the girl, the King, and the monster of Blunder’s dark, twisted tale. I was its author.”

What a great conclusion to this wonderful duology. Two Twisted Crowns picks up from where One Dark Window ends, and the separation of Elspeth and Ravyn made me really sad. I love learning more about Blunder and the Shepherd King’s past.

I wasn’t sure about Elm’s POV at first but I really warmed up to him. The romance is pretty okay, there’s two couples now but Ravyn and Elspeth are still number one for me.

The Shepherd King is such a good duology. I really enjoyed the gothic and dark themes, the Providence Cards, the romance, and the little comedic moments.

“It is not they who bring the reckoning, Ravyn. It is you. It is us.”

One Dark Window takes on a dark atmosphere and an immersive storytelling that made me not want to put it down. The lore of Blunder is really interesting especially because there is magic surrounding it. The Providence Cards that the characters use remind me so much of tarot cards so plus points for that.

Elspeth and The Nightmare are my two favorite characters. Their relationship is certainly an interesting one because The Nightmare is inside Elspeth’s mind. It’s a surprise Elspeth didn’t go insane. Elspeth is such a strong character who only grows stronger. The Nightmare kind of gives me the creeps but he’s also funny.

I like the romance a lot. Ravyn may have a dark and mysterious aura about him but he’s a soft guy and he asks for consent. I love him<333

“Whatever comes in the days ahead, I am with you,” he said. “If you want to go to the mainland, I will take you there. If you want to remain in the east, so will I. And if you want to venture into the west, let me be at your side.”

Magic and spirits, and a quest to find missing girls sounded like a promising story to me. Jack, one of the main characters, is a bard who has lived on the mainland for a long time before he gets called back to the Isle of Cadence to aid in finding the little girls of the East who suddenly disappear with little to no trace.

I love the magic system and how the spirits play a huge part in the daily life of the people. The story revolves around the people of the East because that’s where the main characters are. There are people whose craft allows them to use magic but that comes with a cost.

A lot of parts feel slow to me, there is little action and when there is, it doesn’t really have that oomph. Adaira and Jack, to me, are kind of bland in the beginning. I guess I was expecting more from their talk with the spirits. Torin and Sidra carry most of the story because of how complex their relationship is, and the angst they bring??? I nearly wept.

“Sometimes, the hardest thing to be is the one who lives.”

I’m sorry, but this is my least favorite book of the series. It starts off strong but then it fluctuates as the story goes. The book does take on a much darker tone compared to the first three given Cassie’s state of mind. I honestly thought this was going to be at the 4 star range for me but it just did not work for me.

The parts I did like the most were Celine and the team’s usual banter. The Naturals team really is a family and I love that after all the traumatic shit they’ve been through, they (or Briggs) found each other. I devoured the series because I couldn’t put the books down but now that I’m finished, I’m feeling a bit sad.

I do love the series as a whole and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves mysteries and solving crimes. This is also for fans of Criminal Minds and the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series.

“Home isn’t a place, Cassie. Home is the people who love you most, the people who will always love you, forever and ever, no matter what.”

I think this book is the best one in the series so far. We get Sloane’s backstory this time and my poor baby did not deserve all that. Out of all the members of the Naturals, she is my favorite.

The history of the murders gave me the creeps because what the actual hell??? It’s insane how a lot of things started to connect themselves as the story progressed. I’m excited and scared to dive in the next book because I feel like the stakes are going to be higher.

“None of us had normal childhoods,” Sloane said quietly. “If we had, we wouldn’t be Naturals.”

I sacrificed my sleep for this because I literally could not put it down. Barnes’s writing is easy to read and she knows how to capture attention and keep it. The suspense and the drama kept me hooked!!! We get more of Dean’s backstory, but at what cost??

I love how protective everyone is of each other. That’s my little family right there :(((
