Beautifully written, dark novel about families, imagination and fate. Would've given it another half star if Goodreads allowed.

Mysterious, compelling and ultimately really satisfying. Wish I'd read this one in book-book, rather than e-book, form, though; the plot is just complex enough, shifting in time and place, that I'd have liked an easier way to flip back a few chapters and remind myself what came before.

I'm predisposed to like Pam Houston - I took a writing class with her back in the late 90s and found her to be warm, funny and really insightful. Totally the kind of person you want to hang out with over beers (though her stories will ALWAYS be better than yours). Her new novel is lovely, though it took me a little while to fall into its rhythm -- 144 short chapters, which take place in various locations and with a variety of characters. Take the time to sort it all out, though, and you get an engaging read about an intrepid traveler named Pam who has an enviable circle of wise, recognizably *real* friends and a somewhat less enviable romantic life. This description makes it sound like generic chick lit, which it most assuredly is not.

We listened to the audiobook of The BFG on a recent family vacation and LOVED it. Funny, engaging and really vivid. It was a ton of fun -- even kept the driver engaged when everyone else was asleep.

I love Josh Ritter's songwriting, but was a little worried that his first novel would be terrible. No need to fear -- Ritter wrote a darkly funny tale of a young man just back to Appalachia from World War I and the angel who guides him. Sounds terrible, right? But Ritter creates compelling characters who move through this bizarro world believably. A quick and fairly entertaining read.

Totally fascinating (and well written) peek inside the Obama White House. I know the Obamas themselves don't like the book and contest some of its conclusions... but I kinda don't care.

Wow. Brilliantly written, beautifully imagined. And most enjoyable if you are well versed in the intricacies of Jewish religious life -- though totally worth reading if, like me, you are not.
