Not in Love by Ali Hazelwood

Nah, Ali I’m knocking it down a star because he’s a finance bro who unironically says ‘Fuck capitalism, man’. It should be more for tricking me into reading a hockey romance, but it was cute.
I like the dual POV but I did not enjoy the change in perspective. I’m not sure if that is the correct way of saying it, but I mean the way that when its Rue she says ‘I’ and when its Eli he says ‘he’. It feels as if we were inside Rue’s head because she wants us to be, but we are in Eli’s head without him knowing? Even if he’s supposed to be a main character. If that makes sense.

This book is frustratingly slow and painfully long. Unfortunately, the story does not suffer from sucking ass. It does suffer. From a great many things. Like for example the fact that I genuinely had to check MULTIPLE times if I had the first book in the series because absolutely NOTHING was being explained. I get the whole ‘keeping even the readers in the dark’ thing. Its cool from time to time. But its also fucking frustrating as all hell if we aren’t given even a SNIPPET of exposition. For so long. And it is. LONG. It could’ve EASILY been 250 pages shorter.
Especially if you count the fact that all that Rekk Zharos business is the plot only for about 10% of the book. She spent an entire MONTH in the city not giving a shit about him. We did NOT need the Essi subplot.

I ALSO THOUGHT BOOK 2 WAS OUT NOW I’M MAD AS FUCK.

Yo podría escribir un puto ensayo entero de porque este es uno de los peores libros que yo he leído en mi puta vida. Holy FUCK.
I should’ve known what I was getting into when the book begins with a disclaimer saying the author isn’t QAnon or anti-semitic and these are all just conspiracies from their ‘twisted, fucked up mind’. And then proceeds to write Q fanfiction…
I cannot believe this is the same book that Instagram and TikTok rave about.
Why did you finish it? I try my best to not dnf books even when its so bad its painful.

I’m being wholly generous with my rating. This book is just… so frustrating. At one point all I wanted was to just finish the book so I could end my suffering. Why didn’t I dnf? I’d had the curiosity of what the second book was going to bring for months now. And I told myself that despite the fact that the first book wasn’t my favorite ever, I’d find out what came next. Well, now I regret it. A lot. But hey at least I finished a book in 3 days. Thanks to this book for reminding me that I can still do that, actually.

I hated divergent so I don’t want to say its just divergent with dragons and magic… But its divergent with dragons and magic.
However, its not actually terrible! Its a very fun read! I had a blast reading MOST of it. The beginning was the worst part imo, too slow and divergent-y. But once the dragons start showing up its actually not that bad!
Tairn is probably my favorite character in the story and he deserves to have a bigger role in the next one.
And, surprisingly, its not a horribly toxic relationship!! Most of the points I’m giving the book are for that if I’m honest.
Also, I thought the sequel was already out which is why I read the book and now realizing I have to wait for it is probably going to make my depression worse.

Okay, I can admit that I read Love on the Brain with very large rosetinted glasses because I loved The Love Hypothesis. HOWEVER, the reason I know that this book is better than that one and actually good is simple: Love, Theoretically made me feel exactly like TLH did when I read it. I really loved this book.
I was originally a bit perplexed as to why the book was so long when in 150 pages everything was going so well. And then I realized I was a total fucking idiot??? I don’t know how I didn’t see it coming, and I am very ashamed to say that I did not. But alas, I did not see it coming. After page 171, however I did see everything else coming. My powers of clairvoyance took a hit, pero remontamos.
Regardless of whether or not it is predictable, I liked it. Jack Smith-Turner is the love of my life and I’m not afraid to say it. And Elsie’s, uhm, issues, hit a little too close to home for me. That shit hurt to read. But oh my god it made things so much better.
Once again tho, Ali Hazelwood owns my heart.
The only thing that I wish was different is that, I just wish it was MORE of a slow burn. I feel like once the romance started it went on the normal track of a normal romance while at the same time trying to paint itself like it wasn’t a normal romance? Just because they wait one night doesn’t make it slow. It would’ve made things a lot more tense too.

Not this fucking book using the same plot twist TWICE.
I also kinda noticed that while its technically a slowburn, no it isn’t? It all happens quite fast romantically speaking. I was expecting a bit more yearning. I liked the first kiss scene tho.
I only read it bc I heard the second one in the series was the better one and I hope to GOD its true.
