As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

I love the awareness that this story brings to the pain that a lack of justice can bring. I also felt like it’s depictions of PTSD and the different reactions people can have was super important.

that being said,  the writing felt rushed, like she was just trying to get this out so it was done. I also could not stand how out of character pip acted, traumatized or not.

It took me a very long time to get interested in this book. Everyone told me that would be the case, but I was still surprised that I wasn’t hooked earlier. The modern tone on this series compared to the previous SJM books was hard to connect with, I think.

I wonder if I would like this one better on the second read, since the intense world building for a majority of the book was exhausting. I wanted to attach to these characters but a lot of it was drowned out by the large amount of explanations necessary.

That being said, as the story unfolded, the cliches and stereotypes the characters quickly fell into that the beginning started to crumble. They quickly became funny, unique, and lovable.

The final 15% of the book made the entire slow, mid 85% worth it. I laughed, gasped, cried, shook with feeling, and celebrated with the characters. I am excited for the next one!

I didn’t like this one as much as the first book, but I still really enjoyed my reading experience. I was especially interested in the slow descent of Pip. I am really curious as to how this will conclude in the next book

this one was such a fun read! the mystery was engaging, the twists were exciting, and the characters were likable.

I was able to guess some things that happened pretty early, but I still loved my experience anyway. the main character is so similar to who I was in high school so maybe that’s why I’m extra sympathetic lol.

quality was probably a 3.5 but I have it an extra bump because it felt like all the things I loved about pretty little liars without any of the romanticizing problematic bullshit.

I think this is an unfair rating as I read this last after finishing kingdom of ash. I was still grieving all that happened in that wild ride that I didn’t get to truly appreciate this story. I think I will love it extra when I reread the series as I will read it 3rd instead!

I feel like this one would’ve been rated higher if I had read it on its own. I read this one in tandem with tower of dawn and it was hard to give it a solid review when I read it in chunks. this book, however, was brutal and did not hold back in hurting your feelings LOL

aelin needs to be protected at all costs & I want to give elide a hug.

I LOVED watching aelin find herself again in this one. I had a really hard time getting through heir of fire so this one was a nice change of pace. I am REALLY starting to attach to these characters! can’t wait for what’s next.

holy. crap. before I step into spoiler territory, I just want to emphasize how incredibly engaging, suspenseful, emotional, exciting, and utterly devastating this finale was. I have never had such a huge range of emotions within one book, but yet again sjm shows us how it’s done by delivering this masterpiece.

pain, terror, and agony open this book. we watch every single character we’ve either loved the entire time or we’ve grown to love suffer. to end it with a new page - a page full of hope, light, love, and healing - is everything these characters deserve. except for you, aedion. fuck you.

I will simply never ever recover from the loss of the thirteen or the way that Rowan refuses to let aelin go.

I have not ever cried about a book so much in my life. I am certain I never will again. this book series has changed me & I will think about it and carry it with me for the rest of time.

I LOVED this book. The plot stayed quick and the world kept getting bigger & more complex.

The character work in this one was extra special to me. A story is only as strong as the characters supporting it and this one did not disappoint. Our supporting cast really came into their own & our dragons were cracking me up the entire time.

I firmly believe that
the scene where violet is getting tortured and Liam is there to support her is one of the most poignant points in the series thus far.

The only reason this one is not a 5 is because the
xaden/violet conflict felt very repetitive and it annoyed me.

I am VERY excited to see what happens next, especially with the crazy cliff hangers and huge information bombs we received at the end. January cannot come soon enough!
