Kind of witty but mostly unimpactful stories. I didn't really get the feeling of "feminist mischief" that was described on the back cover. Certainly disturbing though and I am very aware that the prose and stories themselves might actually really appeal to someone else.

Loved the beginning of the book, but somewhere in the middle it lost me and felt increasingly slow and tiresome. I thought the plot summary was actually not that accurate, in the sense that Ginzburg doesn't so much focus on her own family and their mannerisms and traditions, but extrapolates to the lives of an extended circle of friends and prominent figures of her time, which personally I was not as interested in. Finally, the book has often been praised for focusing solely on the personal and simply stating with a cool and objective gaze the political occurrences happening parallel to the characters' lives. Personally, I didn't like this approach as much as I thought I would...

I don't really like YA literature anymore, but I suspect my younger self would have really enjoyed this book. It was refreshing, light, and I loved the hints and mentions of ancient Mayan myths and the Popol Vuh. Even the romance element that I would usually cringed to, concluded beautifully and kind of unpredictably, which was a pleasant change from other stories in the genre. I didn't find the final chapter a bit flat but the overall feeling the book left me was very pleasant.
