The Human Part by Kari Hotakainen

It took me a really long time to finish the Human Part. I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it because the first forty pages intrigued me but after a certain point, I felt that the book lacked a central storyline which connected Salme and her three children. The individual stories felt disconnected from the central theme and somehow, I expected the author to play a larger role in the story.

The beauty of the book lies in the fact that each of the characters seemed to be relatable. They each said something which I made mental notes of. I also enjoyed the free flowing style of the book, I didn't have to connect the dots but continue reading and everything would still make sense. I think 3 stars is a fair rating.

I really, really wanted to like book and perhaps give it more than three stars. The first part of the book was great, much stronger in terms of the plot. There were touching moments that made me feel for the narrator, her brother and her best friend. However, the second part of the book lost the connection with the first part and it left disconnected. It had potential but somehow, that potential was never fully realized and the ending felt rushed.

I'm struggling with the rating for this book. It's between three and four stars. I was very excited to read this, I had read Killing Lincoln the week before so the history of the civil war was fresh in my mind. I thought wait, this is going to be awesome.

That excitement lasted for 60% of the book and after that, it just dwindled. The plot thinned and I was losing interest. It's not a bad book but I just expected more from it.
