I'm having a hard time believing the author of one of my favourite thrillers (The Last Time I Lied) also wrote this 😭 I couldn't get over a lot of things in this book, namely how dumb Charlie was for most of it, who the killer was (called it) and how lazy this book felt. There was so much potential but the execution just wasn't there. For a book that mostly takes place in a car, there was none of the claustrophobia or panic I wanted and even though I finished the book really fast, I mostly wish I hadn't spent 4 hours of my life reading it.

I've been in a very greek mythology mood lately so I decided to pick this book up and let's just say, I'm not mad I read it but I also wasn't blown away by it. I think the premise of the story is so interesting (every 7 years there's the Agon where people from the ancient bloodlines can hunt down the old gods and take their power for themselves - be reborn as a god basically) and there are some parts of it i really loved, like how it takes place in NYC, the modern day take on greek mythology, the fast pacing of the book, the side characters but at the same time there was a lot lacking for me.

I didn't feel much of a connection to any of the main characters, there were too many info dumps which made the book confusing (too much to remember) and I couldn't buy into the romance either. This book definitely got me out of my reading slump tho, which is always a good thing!!

 Favourite quotes:

"The only real thing in this world is what you can do for others. How you can take care of them."

"Sometimes, he'd said, the braver thing is to accept help when you've been made to believe you shouldn't need it."

"He said nothing, but, then, he never needed to. His face was a book that had been written only for her."

I have mixed feelings about this book because on one hand I was really hooked on the plot and the intense feeling of unease the book gave me and wanted to know just what the hell was going on but on the other hand, Alam's prose was so overwritten and over the top (all these SAT words I didn't understand/there was no need for!!!) that it was tedious getting through it. Also the ending really pissed me off, why would you do that??
